newbie basic hunting-law questions

If you've seen my other posts, you know this will be my 1st year hunting. I'll have another guy with me, but I'm here to try and book learn the basics and be ready to learn specifics in the field from him. (Also, don't wanna look like a complete moron when we go!)
So here goes: I'm in North Carolina, specifically at Uwharrie National Forrest.

1-Bow hunting applies to deer, other animals can be hunted with bow or rifle during the animal's season?
**2-As I'm scouting before season opens, can I get in some target practice in that environment, or does having my bow there imply that I'm hunting, meaning I can be ticketed or arrested if a Park Ranger sees me?**
3-In the NC gamelands map book, certain areas are designated "archery zone". Can these areas only be hunted during bow season, or are they the only place you can hunt during bow season? - See the difference in what I'm asking here?

I'm sure these all sound like no-brainers to most of you here, but I just don't want to ruin a weekend by getting a fine or going to jail over something I might do out of ignorance!
Thanks a lot, everyone. I hope ya'll get something out of the newbie questions I ask, maybe a quick review of the basics or recall of a fond memory from when you were new!

RE: newbie basic hunting-law questions

I have target practiced on public land before and never had a problem. A warden should understand someone practicing on National Forest b/c they don't have a place to practice or getting the "feel" of shooting in a hunting environment.

Make sure you also know the season opening/closing dates.
Some dummy on here shot a turkey out of season accidentally last year.[&:]

Hey Drew,

Your questions pertain to regulations that are pretty specific to your state or more specifically the gamelands you're planning on hunting.

I did some research into a public land hunt in NC and I'll admit, even after reading through the regs for a few of the areas (and each one has different regs) even I was a bit confused.

Wanna seem really smart to your buddy? Call your DNR or local Warden and ask him those very same questions. Be sure to know which areas you are considering hunting.

Most likely you could also find that info here:

Yeah, asking a Warden or the Department/Commission is the safest bet.

Some things can be screwy.
In my own state, technically, having any weapon, firearm or bow, in the woods, etc, with you can be "construed as prema facia evidence of hunting" by a Warden at any time of the year.
Not that any decent Warden with some common sense would think that, but I think anystatehas their share of ........ gung-ho pr*cks in the ranks.

So be safe, ask the proper Department about it.

ya know, 1st I was thinking maybe only having target point arrows would construe that you're not hunting, but I guess that could be another charge- not having 7/8 inch or larger tips.

wouldnt lugging around a 3' wide bag target be enough to hint that your target practicing? You may want to go to the office, and get these answer IN WRITING, just to cover your bases.
