Reading on Stand

Your opinions?

I like to read to pass the time on slow days. A small novel that can be tucked into a side pocket on my pants if something comes through. Nothing big and bulky.

Even Michael Waddell plays an electronicYahtzee game with the sound turned off.

I do it. Have a small outdoorsmans Bible or a good Louis LaMoure book... If youre in the market for a good read on stand "The Last of the Breed" is a classic!

I read John Trout's book last year and also a John Grisham book. I love the suspense and passed several nice bucks so I wouldn't lose my place. J/K

When I shot my first deer ten years ago, I was reading the United Methodist Book of Worship and preparing for a funeral that I had to do in a few hours. I was a young pastor and hunter. Since that time I have enjoyed the hunt too much to read on stand, even though I have wondered about doing it. I might try it this year. I usually don't get bored while hunting. Rather, I enjoy the stillness. So, maybe I won't start reading on stand this year either!

Was reading in stand this past season and a nice buck got by me before I knew it. Put the book away in disgust at myself anda bigger buck came down the same trail a minute or two later. He's down in the freezer now. :)

Try it, you would be suprised.

Your sense of hearing seems to highten while reading, at least mine does. I generally hear the deer coming in before I see them whether I'm reading or not.

I've got a small pocket New Testament that's cover is camo; I got it while in the Army National Guard and have kept it all these years. Works great.

I done light homework on stands many times and once brought my laptop out to my gun hunting blind before. You do what you gotta do to get out their.

I take my New Testament and try to read 20 chapters before I leave out of my stand. After I read one chapter I wait for 20 minutes before reading the next. That puts me in the stand all day.

Positives...seems to put you in good standing with God.;)I was hunting in a tough WMA two years ago .Every so many chapters I used the Primos can. I heard something coming and continued to read with my ears wide open. Then...out pranced a young buck. Now the negative..LOL

I had a New Testament in my hand ,the scope cover on and the buck is looking at me. I slid the Book down my shirt and carefully puled off the cover. By now the buck was nearly out of a good shot. I quickly put the cross hairs on him and dropped him. I now leave scope covers off. I find reading helps me from fidgeting in my pack etc. It keeps me still

I read as well on stand. I usually take a hunting magazine, but I also bring novels with, depends on my mood really! I do really enjoy reading and it definitely helps pass the slow times.

I've tried it but it didn't work for me. I got frustrated because my paranoia wouldn't let me pay enough attention to the book!

I've actually been thinking about bringing one of those tiny notepads and a pen or even maybe a PDA and writing rather than reading.

I've always read on the stand, since I was a little kid. Before I could read, I would take an etchasketch and eventually a gameboy. Wasn't untill the last few years I started reading scripture on the stand. Read a paragraph or two, and look around. Always rifle-hunting out of a box blind or sitting on a side of a hill.I've never done it bowhunting. Always felt it was too much movement. I've also always kept my bow in hand the whole time im in the stand.

A few years ago,a VB.net programmer I worked with went hunting with his dad. We had a big website project that was deadlined the day he was supposed to get back. He spent a few hundred dollars in cell phone bill using it for internet access while programming and uploading and stuff while sitting in a box blind. He was done with his part before we were done with ours!

I do it to stay awake when things get real slow in late morning/early afternoon. Last year about 10:30am I was reading and had a doe walk straight into the stand (less than 10 yards) in a rush. She came in so quick that I hardly had time to set the book down...but she became my first bowkill. Early season is tough since there aren't as many dry leaves on the ground, but towards the second half of the season there are enough downed leaves that you can hear them coming from far enough away to get prepared.

When I'm in my stand there hardley no time to read, always on the look out waiting for mr. big rack to show up.
But when I'm in my ground blind and the hunting is a little slow, I'll get my hunting magazine out and read a few stories.

RE: Reading on Stand

I read a fair amount on the stand. Last year, I read "Huckleberry Finn" and "The Catcher in the Rye." I started on "To Kill a Mockingbird," but I just couldn't get into it.

I take my sony AM/FM radio with me, and listen to college football on Saturdays (just with one earbud on min. volume). If there's no game on, you can usually find some good talk radio or music to pass the time.

You may be surprised, but with only one earbud in (your non-shooting ear), and set atvery, very low volume, you can easily hear any approaching game over the broadcast.

In bow season, I will sit on stand for every waking hour of daylight that I'm not working or scheduled to be somewhere else, so there are usually a few all-day sits before I get tagged out. Books and radio really help pass the time - particularly that 10-4 borefest early in bowseason when the temps jump up and the deer lie down.

I wish I had a PSP.

I tried reading magazines but I made the mistake of taking porno mags. I never made it through the hunt without racing home to the little woman. My hunting suffered so I scrapped the reading deal.HCH

i've never read on stand before but i think i may try it. ther are some places where it wouldn't work too well. but i need something to pass the time and keep me from fidgeting. i don't like sitting still for hours on end, i would hope that reading would help. i may try the radio thing also but i'm not sure if the signal would be too great where i hunt.

I could never take my eyes off the landscape .I even hate to take my hands off my bow to eat or drink .Things can happen to fast and I don't want to be holding a book when it does .

Take a couple of target arrows with blunts on them and shoot the little annoying birds that fly by and drive you crazy. It make little to no noise:D

RE: Reading on Stand

The only thing I read on stand is the sticker on the inside of my bow limb that says "Stay Calm Pick A Spot" I havebrought in a walkman to listen to my Packers. Now I just wait to find out the score when I get out of the woods.I find I need to hear and see all of the time, no matter how bored I get. But, if it will help you stay in stand longer then do what you have to do.

I find it real intresting that most folks who made a reply about reading on stand, said they do. I'm amazed. It would seem to me that turning pages all the time would get alot of guys busted. The lack of attention's bad enough but adding all that movement to itmakes reading on standout of the question for me, especially during the rut, when Big bucks are most vulnerable.;)

reading helps me stay in the stand. Two tips, look up and scan the area every page or two, sometimes a deer will come in in complete silence. Second have a place to set your book down easy, I usually slide mine in a pocket on my knee once I spot something
