Rule of thumb on wind?

I has been my experience (very limited) that when winds are high I see fewer deer. At what wind speed should I stay at home?? I know some will say that anytime is a good time to hunt, but those of us that are married have to pick are hunting time carefully :)!!!!

most low land animals are skittish at best in high winds! You be the call on where you draw the line. I am always looking for good reasons to get out and I dont need to much to do so! Gee honey, the house is to warm.....see ya in a week I am going to the slope to chase caribou in Nov LMAO

If the winds/rains come in use this to your advantage and get out of your stand and start slipping through the bush slowly stalking that bad boy. This is my favorite way of hunting because its so forgiving in the event of makeing any noises and wind currents consistly change so the deer restless at times and in doing so, sometimes their right near that tree beside you. Good luck.

i do not sit in a stand during high winds. if i do hunt i walk like the above post said it is forgiving and you can get away with some good scouting if nothing else.

I like a good steady wind, 10 to 15 mph. the only time i
hunt a high wind is when a cold front is movin in .
the deer will be headed for a food source.

Look at the wind through the animals eyes, alot of there sense are slightly alterd so they have to go into overtime, sight, smell,
motion is everywhere, Indeed you can get away with mistakes from yourself. During this time I have found that the deer are either gone before you see them or your going to step on them, It is an advantage for us, you wont see a ear flicker, or a tail move, but you can bett you will get close. Keep your eyes sharp and be ready.

I have no doubt that we are bothered by the wind much more than the deer are. If the wind is so bad that I feel it is unsafe to hunt from the trees then I will hunt from the ground. I have seen and have taken good deer on some days when the wind was very bad. I don't like to let the wind be the deciding factor on whether I hunt or not.

The one thing that comes to mind concerning high winds is the effect it has on arrow flight. No matter how well tuned your bow may be, if you shoot into a cross wind you will see the enhanced version of "archers paradox". So keep that in mind when you are trying to "thread the needle" through an opening. I learned this lesson the hard way and at the most inopportune time. I doubt I will ever forget seeing an enormous B&C buck walk (run) out of my life forever when my arrow could not straighten out in time to zip through an opening that under normal conditions would have been a chip shot...it still hurts to think about it.

The wind evens the playing field. During strong winds look for areas where they have something blocking the wind. The deer will usually bed down on the upper third of the hillside. This gets them out of the direct wind and as the wind blows over the top it will swirl up to them. Kind of like water flowing around a rock in the stream. Still hunt across the side of the ridge and not up and down.

One thing to watch for during strong winds is dead trees falling. As your still hunting glance up from time to time.
