A Plan Comes Together

This this goes to show you once in a while a plan does work! Hope I dont ramble too much here, but I read alot of posts on this board and want to give something back. This all started on last saturday mornings hunt. We have already been seeing bucks chasing does, so we knew things were heating up. The hunt started with great weather, but before long I found myself sittin' in the rain. It only lasted for a 1/2 hour or so, but it was just enough to make the 38 degree temp a little colder. Shortly after the rain stopped, I caught some movement to my right. It was a nice 6 point, definitely a shooter. It was 8:38am(remember that for later)He walked around the front me into a shooting lane, well sort of...he somehow situated himself perfeclty behind this little maple tree taking away any clean shot...then just wandered off. I tried to grunt him back, but no luck. A good morning nonetheless. Since it saturday I wanted to use the opportunity to put a stand up on a scrape line I had seen a day earlier. Because of a prior committment I had 20 minutes to put it up and get back to the house....oh by the way pouring down rain by this point. Because of all this I did not have time sit in the stand for any period of time to check my shooting lanes for minor trimming needs.
Sunday morning I decided to sit the new stand to study the setup. I let out a few grunts here and there, but no action. I looked at my watch and noticed it was 8:36am. So jokingly I thought great, only two more minutes and Ill see a deer! If that kind of stuff only happened right! Then, I heard a twig snap behind me, I slowly turned to see a 8 pointer walking directly towards me. About 25 yds from me he looks right at me....busted right...nope, head back down and keeps coming. Now Im thinking he'll swing down wind to see if he can wind this thing in the tree...he doesnt. He swings upwind walking broadside to me. I am now at full draw and following him, waiting for an opening in the brush. I see one approching, and he walks into it about 15 yds out, I give him a quick grunt with a hands free grunt call...he stops slightly quartering away, and thankfully I put a good shot on him. 40yds later he was down....Finally, a plan comes togther!...Oh I forgot to tell ya, I checked my watch immediatley after the shot....8:38am
I would like to share a pic...someone help me out Please.

Congradulations on the hunt.

I have often had my success the 1st night in a stand. Now if I only had the time to move stands everyday so every hunt was a "1st night" location.

That's great! Gotta love it when the plan comes together! I have one thought though . . . since the time on Saturday was 8:38 and daylight savings time ended Sunday morning before your hunt, the time was exactly 25 hours later--or had you not yet changed your watch?

BTW--how big was he?

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.

I was wondering if any one would catch that. I had not changed my watch yet...figured it would only confuse me. I leave that for monday at work

Very Nice!!! Congrats on a fine shot, and a nice deer.

I Subscribe to "the first time in a stand, is the best time" as well.

I too saw a buck on Saturday, broadside at 9 yds, at 8:40, in a slight rain. I didn't see anything sunday though. Nice deer!!!
