Carbon Express Maxima Breakage
 

Tonight, I was shooting a new batch of Carbon Express Maxima's through afresh bag target. On the first group, one of the arrows was a little difficult to remove. I lightly wiggled it some while I pulled and the shaft suddenly snapped about three inches from the insert. I have shotseveral different manufacturers' carbons and I know this should not have been enough force to break the arrow. I work in the aviation maintenance industry and I know carbon composites are an 'all-or-nothing' propostion when it comes to strength.

I immediately stopped shooting the Maxima's for safety's sake and called Carbon Express but they're closed for the day. These were not cheap arrows...

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I don't understand why an arrow would be hard to remove from a bag target. They're 2 or 3 finger removal. AND, if an arrow is stuck you can't be "Wiggling it slightly" from side to side. If you do you can break them.[&:]

P.S. Buy yourself a good arrow puller. If you're still having trouble, lube the front 6 or 8 inches of your arrows with a silicone spray.

I have 3 buddies who all either shoot the Maximas or the Maxima Hunters and they all love them. Never heard of that or of a arrow getting stuck inside of a bad target unless your inserts are too big and it has caused the shoulder to extend out beyond the arrow dia and they hang up/snag on the contents inside the bag. I had to fix an arrow one time and didnt have an insert with the same shoulder O.D. as the shaft but had the same I.D. and it snagged inside on the material but not enough to break an arrow. Do you have something broke off inside the bag from a previous shooting session?

I have been shooting those for 8 months now and they are very durable. I shoot 350's and have shot several deer with them and the arrows are still in my quiver and shooting. I have shot mine a lot also at bag targets and I have a yellow jacket bag that sometimes requires alot of labor to get them removed and still have not broke one. I would say you got a defective one or that arrow got damaged from another arrow being shot at it. You are right they are pricey but the best I have used as of to date.

Dave I have a yellow jacket bag that is a real pain to pull arrows out of half the time. You basically need a log chain and a pickup...it's like the material grabs the arrow and won't let go. My Deltas are two finger removal..I hate this yellow jacket bag.

I'd bet a dollar any bag targets that are hard to pull arrows out of do not contain the cotton stuffing, but more than likely has fiberglass or screen material inside. I have had the same bag target for 12 years(I am serious) with thousands of shots and its still better than most on the market. All I do is rotate back to front every 50 shots or so and replace the cover every couple years. My fatherinlaw keeps buying a new bag target every year or so cause he got a bargain. [&:] Best money spent is on a high quality bag target that contains cotton stuffing inside even if it costs more.

Back to the Maximas, no experience with them but a good chance you might have hit the arrow with another while shooting.

Funny you mention it, my buddy Frank broke at least 2 off in a Morrell Range Bag target at our club. They were broke at about the point where they were sticking out of the bag......just snapped and barely hanging on.
Just from the force of impact.
I think he broke another one in a 3D target that day as well? I need to call him to refresh my memory but it wasn't pretty.
This was winter and below freezing so maybe the cold played a factor? But in any event I HAVE seen the Maximas literally snap off for no apparent reason.

Please post any info from your friend and I'll include it when I call Carbon Express. I have used their products before with great results so I know they will want to hear about the issue. It's hard to describebut the easeof breaking the arrow was eery.

I willalso run the metal detector over the target to confirm thatthere is nothing embedded from previous shooting.

Carbon Express agreed that the arrow was defective and will replace it - great customer service. They asked for the lot # which is printed in black next to the Maxima decal on the shaft.
