Default Can you help me, help educate a fellow bowhunter??

The sorest spot in my life are the stories about bowhunters not doing there homework and wounding deer. I'm certain that doesn't suprise some on the MB, based on some of my previous posts.
Its the single most thing that makes me wish I wasn't in this sport because of the horror stories I hear and read. 3 stories in the last 2 weeks!!!! A guy is hunting the neighbors property and has wounded 2 deer this year. Wounded a buck and never recovered last year!! And I pass on the small bucks ONLY so this A****** can wound them!!!

Well,..here is what I need. A woman here at work hunts. I just found out. Stopped by yesterday to see how she's doing? Conversation starts out fine. By the time we're done,...and I'm about to PUKE I find she has shot 4 deer in the last 2 weeks and only recovered 1!!!! The other 3 were clear wounded deer,...2 does and an 8 point. Somehow we get onto equipment. Here is what I find out!!!!!!!!!:

Shoots an old Hoyt set at 40lbs,...shoots 85gr miniblasters, and a 1913 arrow!! Then shes telling me how only a few inches of arrow goes into the deer. DDUUUHHHH......Needless to say she shouldn't be hunting with this set-up! I would like to "turn over a new leaf", by instead of being the prick I usually am when confronted with these stories and sending folks on their way to never return,...I would like instead to attempt to educate her.
I've been at archery and hunting for >20 years and could easily explain the principles to her but think I may be "safer" (Interpreted= less likely to LOOSE IT!!!!) to discuss it and have some articles about KE and mechanicals to share with her. Can anyone pass on any articles that would explain to her the fact that she is WAY outa line with this set-up?????

Thanks guys,...and wish me luck!!!

For one thing I think her setup might be ILLEGAL according to NYS specifications. I'm pretty sure that you must pull at least 45# and or be shooting a certain amount of KE. You can double check the NYS DEC webpage for exact specs.

I would have quit hunting , i have too much respect for the animals to do that. A couple years ago i didnt let my wife bow hunt because she didnt practice that summer. I told her i wasnt wasting my fall hunt tracking wounded animals. She didnt argue about it

TWANG...are you sure you aren't just mad because you made a pass on her at work and she brushed off your advances like a pesky fly buzzing around your Bud Light beer on a hot summer day? But in all seriousness, I feel your pain and come across similar circumstances all of the time and I'm the worst at being tactful so I say nothing at all which isn't the right thing to do either. Nevertheless I have no good advice for you and will follow this thread to see what kind of responses it gets.

THIS IS A TOUGH ONE!I would say that person is like many others out hunting with a bow in that they don't know much if any about the technical side of bow hunting.they don't have any idea about K.E. or f.p.s.--probably lucky that they know what equipment they own let alone what the options are for them to get a more efficient set-up.EDUCATION is the key as these people will not stop hunting so we need to try to help them understand what would work better for them in a polite explanation to help them understand--if they want to be better at hunting(i think everyone wants to be better).sure there are the select few of the know-it-all's that won't listen to anyone about anything, but for the majority i think they just don't have the general EDUCATION about the equipment they choose or how to use it properly.JMHO.

Stupid idiots. Why do people hear and understand they should have a certain amount of K.E. to use mechanicals.... and then think it doesn't apply to them when they have about 60 percent of the minimum recommendation. Somewhere, some idiot set her up with that set-up too I'm sure. What are they teaching in the mandatory Bowhunter Education Classes in NY? I guess that's why I don't like mechanicals. They have some needs(K.E.) and people think it doesn't apply to them. Of course, I guess the same people would shoot dirt banks with their Thunderheads and not change the inserts before hunting. You don't need articles. Use the game book minimum requirements. Use what most manufacturers suggest for K.E. 55 foot pounds.(MINIMUM) Use your experience. Go to Steve Jacksons site and compute her K.E. for her. She'll soon see she shouldn't be hunting tweets with that set up. Heck, her OWN experiences to this point should be the BEST convincer/educator going. DUhhhhhhhhhhhhh is right. Are you stupid lady? My new hunting buddy, LEN, likes his mechanicals... but he's shooting something like 76-78 foot pounds of KE. He has great results. His 11 year old son got his first deer with the bow the other day. 40 pound bow, fixed broadheads... 20 yards... total passthrough. Even though Len loves his mechanicals he knows the rules and made his son tune his FIXED BROADHEADS. And no horror story to it.

40 lb is plenty but, she dosen't have the ke to use machanical heads. She should be using a cut on impack head some thing like a stealforce single blade. I have known of three bowhunter two young boys and one woman that have taken lots deer with 35 lb compound and have not lost any deer. You got remimber there are lot of bowhunter out there hunting with 40 lb recurves and long bows most are not getting the ke of a 35 lb compound. Also she has got to make a good shot

Twang, Eders bow states (January Issue)

" For deer and bear hunting, mechanical broadheads should be restricted to only those bowhunters who generate at least 50-55 foot-pounds of kinetic energy. This is comparable to a 450 grain arrow being shot at 245 fps - roughly the output of a 55 pound moderate cam bow".

While mechs can be good heads for the appropriate set up they waste KE while opening. Your friend has less to start with. 40 lbs is ok for fixed. Good luck!

Why not stop back by, tell her you were thinking about her dilema and wanted to help out. Ask her if her bows been tuned, if not offer to show her how it's done and do it. Then give her some form of quality cut to the tip 1" or less cutting diameter broadhead, and suggest she try these out, as these are the type of heads that perform best on her set up. Approach her with a helpful attitude, not as a know it all, and genuinely want to help her. You'll get the job done, and she'll be forever greatfull if she accepts your offer of help. If she doesn't, swallow hard and move on.

Thanks folks for the replys. Unfortunately for the whitetail, she could care less. I talked, gave some websites that explaine the KE needed etc. She has a KE of ~30 as near I can tell with her set-up. I estimated she may be getting 170fps,...but probably not even that. Her response is a new bow for next year and I told her that we could consider options to help her for this year. No interest! I explained that a new bow wasn't the answer.

Anyway her last story was to tell me when she went to Gurenteed archery to buy the broadheads a couple days before season started, how the shop owner said "Oh season must be starting tomorrow now that I see you in my shop." And she then followed with all she needs to do is shoot a couple arrows to be sure her pin didn't get bumped since last year.

THEN I bump into someone that knows her right before lunch and claims the only reason she hunts is to brag for attention about doing something that so few women do!!!!! And not to waste my breath!

Wolfen, Yea she WAS a cutie but I could see the "ugly" coming out as we had this last conversation. I will give her respectfully, business required existence acknowledgement from here on out!!!!!!! That LLPOSB!!!!!!!!!! (You will need to e-mail me for the acronym!
