Bowhunting fingers of woods.....
Because of land being sold and bought, I may be limited to bowhunt just a few fingers of woods. The fingers are connected to larger bodies of timber which has very good deer activity and numbers, but I can't hunt them. The majority of the deer hang/travel more into the larger bodies of timber than in the fingers. I have seen deer in the fingers before, but it is mostly the same doe and two fawn every morning. About the only time I have seen a buckin these fingers was during the rut. Between the two fingers is a bean field (around the edge) and a corn field in the middle.
Does anyone have any advice they can pass along on getting more activity and drawing more deer into these fingers? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks |
RE: Bowhunting fingers of woods.....
Well, if these fingers attach to the larger bodies these are funnels..perfect place to hunt during pre-rut and rut.

RE: Bowhunting fingers of woods.....
Let me explain it a little better. There is a large body of woods (where I can't hunt and most of the deer seem to be) and these fingers branch off the main body. So there isn't larger body of woods at each end, just one. So since the mojority of the deer don't go up into the fingers often, what can I do to change that? Thanks

RE: Bowhunting fingers of woods.....
I would think the deer would be using the bean fields early in the year
and the corn fields later in the year unless there alot of fields in or around the big woods. Later in the year when the corn is cut and gone, BAIT THEM a little corn, apples, wheat, bait every day or at least every other day a little at a time 2 gallons, they will come. You have to be on a regular schedule to bea MASTERBAITER.:D |

I'm with Jag-Mag. Feed them regularly and they will be around. If you don't want to do that, you could try a decoy come the rut, but real does work much better;). If you keep your does around until then, they could become your best friends.

RE: Bowhunting fingers of woods.....
Can you plant a small food plot at the very end of each finger opposite of the "large body of woods" so they have a reason to travel thru your fingers?

RE: Bowhunting fingers of woods.....
The fingers surrounded by a bean field sounds like a perfect set up to me. At least that is, for evening hunts or even mid day. I saw deer in three places today feeding around 12:30. Check them out up close to the big woods and I'm sure you'll find some trails coming and going to the beans.

RE: Bowhunting fingers of woods.....
Hunt the inside corners where they butt up to the larger woods about 20-30 yrds up in the finger.
