I shoot out to 60 yards at my target, but have not taken anything over 50. Id say im not very good at 60 yards out. My groups are not consistantout at 60 yards and I can imagine much worse out further. I like to shoot distance more for the practice. It helps me keep my form right, and when you come in to closer ranges, its almost a give me.

with a compound yes, I'd take a 60-70 yard shot. Those shots are makeable with compounds and out west isn't uncommon.

compounds are designed to shoot long distances

The ehtics police would crucify Howard and Fred Bear with his 100 yard shots he'd shoot at the drop of a hat.
And we'd have to add Ben Pearson to that list. He once shot a polar bear at over 60 yards, and then shot it again at 80 yards. He also shot an antelope at 25 yards, which is reasonable, except the antelope was on a full run!!
All with a recurve!

" Are some of you guys really that good at 50, 60 70 yds??? "

Just as a general statement, I'd say bowhunters as a group are far more prone to exagerating than even fisherman are. Mostly it's a macho thing. My experience is that the average bow hunter says his bow is set5 pounds heavier than it really is, and the actual setting is 5 pounds heavier than the fellow can properly handle. He also exagerates the draw length and the speed he is getting by at least 10% so do I think guys are as accurate as they say they are? Not even close... but of course I could be exagerating somewhat. :D

I practice out to 60 yards but don't shoot over 40. My longest killing shot so far was 35 yards on a bull elk that I couldn't get closer too.

I had never done much practice @ 40 or beyond just because I was nervous I would miss. Now, I shoot alot at 40 and it has made a much beter shooter in close at 20-30. Those long shots are alot of fun to practice on, but I would also never shoot over around 35 on game.

I'll shoot out to 50 yds in practice, but don't see myself taking a shot over 40yds in abest case scenario. Again, it depends on the shot presented and the conditions. As far as beyond 50, I don't think my aging eyes see much beyond that without a scope.:D

Yes, or should I say, I once was more so than now. Like was mentioned, I've never taken a 50 plus yard shot on wild game however in 3D courses and preparing for an elk trip, yes I once was. Now, I simply practice out to 50 yards only to make the 20 yard shots "seem" easier. Like the song says "I'm not as good as I once was but I am as good once as I ever was."

I can relate to that. I really used to beable to shoot a lot better than I do now, but I'm a much better hunter than I used to be and consequently end up witha lot ofreal slam dunk shots. They're so much more fun than 30 yard shots.

I practice out to 50 yards. Id never shoot at a deer over 40. Conditions would have to just rightfor me to do even 40.
