Hey Rick, I spent most of the afternoon, so far, shooting my recurve while I wait for the BGE AC guy. I think this baby is humming right along about 180 fps. Ok, so I'm guessing, but it certainly isn't fast.

RE: What's a realistic hunting arrow speed today
Us bowhunters are finicky, fickle, personalized, opinionated no it alls. But hey.....that's what makes us special, right? :D[8D]
Anyways, to the question....If you are pulling in the 60-65 # range, 260 is actually pretty darn respectable, especially if you are under a 30" draw. I think anything in the 260-270 or 5 range is a really good hunting set up. Anything over 275 is a bonus. If you were to ask what I personally am getting, it's shooting a 425 gr. arrow @ 288. BUT, I have a 30" draw and pull 73#. I'm not so sure that speed is a good evaluation tool for todays bows anymore. There are just entirely too many variables. What add ons are on the string, draw length, weight, arrow weight, arrow diameter, the list just goes on and on. I would be plenty happy w/ 260 fps. I figured your KE w/ a 390 gr. arrow, which is 6 grains per pound. That's 59 foot pounds of KE. More than enough to take any deer sized game. |
