5X5 or 10pt
 
Kind of a dumb question but I was just curious as to why in diffrent parts of the country people will call a rack diffrently. It has been my experience in the west that a rack is called by the number of points on each side 4X5, etc. Whereas in other parts it is called by the total number of points, 9pt. Does anyone know why?

What do you guys from the east call a 6x6 bull elk?
A 6 pt or a 12 pt?
How about a 4 pt muley with brow tines?
A 4 pt, a 5 pt, a 10 pt?

Them Eastern like to make it sound big by saying &quot; I shot me a 9 pointer&quot;. Don't believe me what sounds bigger 4 x 5 or 9 pointer, I rest my case!

Actually I asked the very same question a month or so ago on the deer forum. The response I got was; easterns call every point over 1&quot; a point and total it. While Westerns call it right side and left side, some count the brows (eye gaurds) others don't. I guess my answer was, who knows why, it just is what it is!!!!!

Trapperjohn, we just get tired counting past 6 or 7. When I talk to my friends back east I always call it a 4x4 or 5x5 or ect. That way they know what I am talking about. The local boys here, I would call it a 4 pointer or a 5. I would not call a 4x4, a 8 pointer. When you are in Rome, you do as the Romans. Good luck this season, Bobby

The way I always understood it was with whitetail you counted all the points and with mulies and blacktails you did the 4X5 stuff. What do I know though, I have only hunted blacktail once in Ca.

When out west I use thier lingo. When at home I use ours. We're all right. Interesting point is that big bucks aren't just a western thing. Just Buffalo County, WI has 33 B&C and 118 P&Y bucks. That's just one county!

Actually there are two theories about tine counting methods, although neither have been scientifically confirmed.

One holds that when Teddy Roosevelt went back east from his hunting and ranching expeditions to the west, most notably here in North Dakota back in the 1800s, he quickly realized that the easterners had grown so accustomed to shooting deer just out of their spots that they could no longer count very high and so he broke it down into smaller numbers that they could grasp.

The second theory is that easterners aren't smart enough to learn their addition tables and never got beyond counting their numbers on their fingers. So where an intelligent western can add 5 plus 5 and come up with 10 in his mind, an easterner has to count on his fingers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

As I said this has never been confirmed so their may be other theories that prevail in the end.

Around here, most hunters just call them by total points, but I actually like call it by both sides. It tells you more information about the rack. Was it somewhat sysmetrical? or was lopsided?

East Coaster here and I say a deer would be number of points.
Elk/Larger members tend to have more symetrical racks so they would be 5x5, 6x5 etc. One of these Years I will get drawn in the PA Elk tag lottery and Just say My trophy. Yes we in PA have an ELk Population.

Not all that uncommon for an non-typical rack on deer. What do you call a non typical rack? Hopefully a monster but I dont think 12x9 or whatever sounds as good vs saying 21 point non-typical. To each their own I guess.

Either way when walking through the woods don't eat the brown smart pellets.

Both ways of counting gets the same outcome.
