Ever arrow a raccoon? or a skunk?

Last season I saw the biggest raccoon I have ever seen while in my stand. I did'nt know they got that big, this thing was like a small black bear, LOL!! I was'nt sure if they were in season yet, so I just watched him go by me at about 25 yards. Turns out it would have been legal andI could have had a nice mount made out of him. Anyone ever take one? or a skunk? (had a shot at one of those too)

Yup, I've shot racoons, ground hogs and porcupines, but I leave the skunks alone. ;)

2 farms I hunt have a rule that you have to shoot any and all raccoons you see in orderto hunt the farm. You should see the smiles I get when pulling them out, more so than when I get a deer. I guess raccoons can do a lot of damage to corn?

His buddy sells the hides of every one we shoot.

I once made the mistake of shooting a VERY large groundhog with a field point. I was only about 12 or 13. To make a long story short, tyhe field point didn't kill the groundhog quickly. As I was holding the ggroundhog down with my bow to get another arrow, he grabbed my bowstring and steel cables (Jennings Forked Lightning) and chewed them clean through in a few seconds. As he ran off to lick his wounds, I heard him muttering obscenities about stupid kids, and he vowed rvevenge. I don't mess with groundhogs any more for that reason. TRUE STORY!!!!!!

I shot a coon in the throat several years ago with a 2.5" vortex broadhead........messy.

Don't have coons here but have a lot of skunks and they are just coming out from the winter. I have shot several with the bow and the only problem I had was when the arrow stayed in the skunk. I usually leave the skunk for a day before I go to garbage bag it and then get my arrow. As long as you pass through the arrow doesn't smell. If it does smell a little downy fabric softner (just like you use on dogs when sprayed) will take the foul smell away.

I actually killed two 'coons with my bow this year. Too bad I didn't get to keep either of them.[:o] I spotted them about 70 yds out and since the day was going pretty slow, I decided to put a stalk on them and try to kill one. I stalked within 30 yds where I drew back and drilled one. He ran away so I drew back and drilled the second. That one ran away to so I followed the trail about 10 yds to the base of a tree. I looked up the tree and saw both of them hanging over a forked limb 30ft up where they both died. My uncle would't let me cut down the tree so they just stayed up there.[&:]

RE: Ever arrow a raccoon? or a skunk?

Since hubby and Dad have already shared this story with everyone AND their dog (and with people they have met since this happened), I may as well fess up to it here and let everybody have a good laugh (copied the account of shame from e-mail to friend who also had no sympathy!). This was in September of last year and I hunt in Texas so when I say it was hot you know what I mean!

Was up and out early Saturday and at my blind before
daybreak. Walked in through a pusture full of wet goat
weeds, fresh cowpatties, and mama cows with their
babies. Yum. Get to my blind and get set up and wait.
And wait. And wait. About 9 saw a doe and a yearling.
No shot at the yearling but a decent shot at the doe.
WOW! First shot I have had all season! So I pull back,
aim, ready, fire. BAM! Smacked my left arm with my
string and the doe jumped when she heard the noise! It
was like a choreographed ballet between her and my
arrow. At least I found my arrow. Went home dejected
but determined to try again that afternoon.

Afternoon was hot and dry and the mosquitos were out
in full force. Made me glad I was hunting from an
enclosed blind and not a tree stand. Saw nothing until
a little before dark and there came a darn raccoon
eating all of my corn. I coughed and clapped and
shooed and the stinking animal would not go away. So I
decided to shoot the thing and take it home as a
trophy. Why not? Nothing else was going on. Whack!
Missed the thing and he/she/it stood up and chattered
at me! Yes! Chattered at me as if it was amusing! That
was that! I nocked another arrow and turned my bow to
the window. But wait, I was caught. The cam had caught
on the bow hanger at the top of my blind (which has now
been permanently removed). I started to ease my arrow
down but, in all the excitement, I shot!
Yes, I shot. Right through the side of the blind. So I
went home missing a doe and a raccoon and one arrow
that I could not find and with a hole in the blind. I
was in tears I was so upset and was talking like a
five year old and ended the story to my husband with
"And I got a boo boo and it hurts!" (Huge bruise the
size of a small state on the side of my arm from
Saturday a.m.). Looking back I am impressed that he
could keep his composure until I got out of the room.

I don't think I'd shoot a skunk. Just sounds like it would smell to much

Got this lil' fella last year. Him, ma and sis were walking along a logging road and I whacked him. The farmers wouldn't be too happy with me if I ever let one walk.

That's pretty cool. Thanks for the responses, guys. I never knew the farmers hated them so much. My landowner wants ALL coyotes dead but he has never mentioned the raccoons. I guess I'll have to put them on the hit list! :D

Way I got it figured, anything that is legal shooting in season, and I am in the tree stand: deer, bear, turkey, coons, fox, coyotes..... it passes and doesnt know I am there, I am shooting....... except maybe skunks...eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww ww, and it would be one unrecoverable arrow! Way back in my early bow hunting days I shot a skunk at 35 yards. I was hunting with a Bear Polar LTD bow and Fred Bear Super Razorheads and aluminum Easton game getter arrows. Dang near cut him completely in two. I carefully recovered my arrow and never thought much about it but my wife complained about the smell when I got home........lol.

I shot a coon once with the bow and will never do it agian. It made the most horrible sounds you've ver heard an animal make before dying[:o]

Drilled a coon out of tree last year. He was crawling up a tree about 10 feet from the one that I was in, and I short-circuited his climb with an Easton to the snout!

Never had the chance to drill a raccoon , although I would.I have shoot lots of porcupines from my stand.I scare them and once they start up a tree I nail them, after the broad heads passes through wait for a second ,then you hear the blood run from them like a tap has been turned on

I've shot quite a few coons and even a few skunks with my bow. When I shoot a skunk I usually just leave my arrow be for a few days, then go back to retrieve it.

Hello
I've shot several raccoons, no skunks. I wanted to shoot a skunk for a rug but never have. I think they'd make a nice rug and conversation piece.

My first raccoon was shot about twenty feet up in a tree. Drilled him with the first arrow and must have broken his back in the shot, he died in the fork in the tree where he was when I shot him. There was no way to climb the tree so I went homgot my fishing arrow and string. After several attempts I nailed him in the paw and the barb bite enough to yank him out.
