Thanks for advice to a new hunter
 

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone's advice. I will probably be going soon to the archery shop... if I can ever find the time. My husband and I are both beginners sort of. He has been hunting for a couple years, but has yet to bring one home. He's never been bow hunting, so we're both just starting with that. I just wander a few things... how far can a bow shoot? Where do I find out all this kinda stuff??? Is there a magazine that anyone would advise me read??? Anything will help! Where can I find the rules in my state for bow hunting?

Kel, you could try Peterson's Bowhunting, Bowhunting World, Bow & Arrow Hunting. They give not only hunting stories but some good technical info on how to shoot and bow setups.
For getting the rules for your state you just have to log onto your state's web site. That should have all the info you need.
How far can a bow shoot? It depends on a lot of things. Most hunting bows can shoot probably a couple hundred yards if you aim up at about a 35 degree angle. Flight shooting is an activity where that's what they do. Farthest distance shot so far is over a mile (special equipment). Now if you are asking about maximum distance to be shooting for hunting I always advocate 30 yards or less for people of average ability, this depending on your proficiency level. Find out through practice at what maximum distance you can group arrows into about a 4" to 6" group. That should probably be your absolute maximum you should shoot at deer. You have to take into account that during these practice sessions you don't have all that adreniline shooting through your veins and everything is under control at a stationary target. In the woods it's all different. Unknown distance, knees are knocking, you can't breathe right. In other words you get excited00 ah the RUSH. Make the distance shorter that you would shoot to kill the animal cleanly.

Kel to find your states web page do a search for South Carolinas division of wildlife or somethen simialar.(unsure if it is called that down your way)also on the Ohio regs it gives the web address so ya may look there
