turkeys with a bow?

any suggestion on broadheads for turkeys?

RE: turkeys with a bow?

I use Nap Spitfire Gobbler Getter's 100gr, backed with Muzzy Grasshopper's to prevent the arrow from passing through.

I'm shooting the same setup as nubo. I just have not gotten a shot off at a turkey yet to see how they work. With any luck I will get that chance in about 3 weeks.

I've killed 15 birds with a bow and the NAP Spitfire is the best head I have ever shot for turkeys- This head is ideal for turkeys. I don't put anything behind it but it wouldn't hurt.

RE: turkeys with a bow?

I've shot two turkeys with a bow. Both were with thunderhead broadheads. One flew off for about 80 yards before tumbling into a creek, the other was pinned by the arrow but flapped his way off and walked away never to be found. (Try tracking a turkey, it's hard) After that I started putting a fender washer behind the broadhead. It flies fine for 15 yards. Haven't gotten a chance to hit a turkey with it yet to see if it helps. Saw that as a suggestion from some old timers. Anyone else tried that?

Use a wide cutting diameter, or heads with a lot of shock. I think that there is a broadhead out there, i think by NAP, called the gobbler thunderhead? It has a wide cutting diameter and a round point for a heavy shock.

rocket makes a blade called the hammerhead. It has a 2 " cutting diameter. If i take my bow, it will be topped with one of these.

RE: turkeys with a bow?

I saw those NAP Spitfire Gobbler Getters online, but I haven't tried them. I kind of like the idea of the rounded point to discourage pass-throughs, but I'm assuming they wouldn't work with shoot-through screens on a blind.

For that matter, I haven't tried any mechanical blades with the shoot-through screens becauseI figured they would either snag or open prematurely or both. Anyone have any experience with this?

Last year I was able to get 3 birds using a Muzzy alone each time, but I lost a nice tom last week, so I bought some Adder points to put behind the broadheads. Hopefully that will work better. Has anyone tried using them behind mechanicals?

I'd love to try a huge mechanical, but in SD the limit is 1 7/8"

I've seen the promos for the guillitine and it would seem to solve a few problems, if used right, but it's not really an option for mesince itisn't legal in SD, either. It's wider than it is long and it has more than 1 7/8 cutting edge.

This was my first year turkey hunting and I used a Muzzy at 30 yards. One shot, no problem. He didn't go anywhere.

Kamil - I have both of those types of broadhead 'backers' (the spring type and the Adder) but I've never shot them at a bird before. Which one works best?

RE: turkeys with a bow?

I think that the judo point(the one with the four claws ) will work better...This is my theory...the broadhead cuts through the bird while the judo point slows down the arrow so that it will stay inside the bird to avoid it flying away or going too far...as the broadhead cuts the judo point slows it down... the other one i have a feeling cuts more and doesnt work as well, but thats my opinion
