Summer time bowhunting property projects?
 

I know some of you have property that you do ongoing projects on. What projects do you have planned for this summer to complete for next season? My summer time projects are as follows:

My father and I are planning on adding in some significant food plots. These areas are all new, never had a food plot in them, however the bottom two are at least already fields. The top one will be clearing trees and a significant amount of clearing, all wooded right now. Plowing is taking place this week, in the areas that are fields. We plan to lime and disc in 2 weeks when I am down there for turkey season and then let it settle and leach in (hopefully getting to a 6.5-7ph level) until early August when we will begin seeding. We will be planting Biologic Full Draw, Maximum, and Premium Perennial. The big plot on the bottom left will be 50% Full Draw, 25% Maximum, and 25% Premium Perennial. The other plots will be all Full Draw. I also have a bag of Secret Spot that I will be putting in somewhere, not sure yet. I have a 2250 lbs of lime in bags that we will be spreading, hopefully this will be enough. There will be about 1.5-2 acres of food plots total going in between all the areas. I will be doing tests in two weeks on the soil to see where it is at right now, I am guessing 5.5ph or so. The good thing about the fields is that there has been manure spread weekly on them for the last 3 years, so it is all fertilized very well. The blue circle next to the large foodplot is also another permanent stand that we plan to build so that will give my father an additional spot to hunt, he doesn't like my portable lock ons that I have scattered all over.

The property is just about 100 acres, the total of the food plots combined is around 2 acres.

I just got back from my grandpa's lot where we finalized some of our summer plans.

Our first project of the year is going to be plowing about4 acres of food plots in our field. Some of it was plowed last year year and other parts will be its first time in about 25 years. We had the bulldozer out there last weekend clearing the area up. We are doing soybeans, field corn, sweet corn, and probably some clover and buckwheat. That will be getting done here as soon as my Dad and I find the time to get down there with the tractors.

Next project is determining our actual property lines. When my Grandpa bought the property the lines were sketchy and he never knew for sure where they were. So this year we are going to use my GPS,courthouse maps/deeds,and some math (AHHH) to figure out where the lines truely are. It should be fun.

One project that is still in the works is that me might build a small cabin out there. We are thinking like a 12x20 single room cabin that is built on skids, so as not to be permanent (hopefully cheaper in the tax dept.). We are hoping one of the local Amish guys can do it cheap because his business is building mini-barns. That would be nice for sleeping over for a day or two. Nothing fancy, just opperational. I hope we get this done...thats my favorite project.

Those are the main projects for the year. Some of the smaller ones include firewood, treestand building/setup, scouting, and other hunting related activities.

It's going to be a busy summer, but I can't wait!

food plots for me as well. We just got done clearing all the trails around the woods, and cutting quite a few trees. We're in the process of putting in an extensive food plot. I'm excited to get it in! We'll see how things turn out.

.308, are you guys spreading lime? I have an industrial seeder to spread the lime with that will hold 500lbs in a load, but am curious as to what other guys are using to spread theirs. I hope this seeder works, it is the 3 point attached kind for the back of our 27 horse 4wd kubota. I bought the powdered lime, so it will be a messy job for sure. The pelletized lime was 2x as expensive...........

Rick, I'm not sure if we are going to spread any lime or not. I know we talked about it at one time, but I don't know if it will get done or not. I'll have to ask my Dad when he gets home if he wants to get a load or not. He was thinking of getting a big dump load on our trailor, and then use my grandpa's tractor with the front-lift to scoop it up and pour it in the hopper.

I do know that when we started planting plots at our house we did use lime. If I remember correctly, we got the pelletized version because it flows out of our spreader much better than the powder. We also have a large funnel type spreader that hooks up to the 3-pt hitch and PTO drive. It also has anextra hook on theback of the feeder to attatchour discs behind to toss the soil.Itworks pretty good that way.The powder seemed to stick inside and not give and even of a coat.

Food plots,more stand options,and maybe i'll try fertilizing the bigger white oaks.

planting food plots this weekend about 6 ac. of whitetail clover. We planted 6 ac. 7 weeks ago as well.
