Am I too picky or are all bowhunters this way?

Examples:
(1)neither my nearest two pro shops or a Gander Mtn. don't carry 17/64" field points. I need them for my A/C Slims, gave mine to my son for his Axis. The GM store and one shop carries Axis shafts but not the correct size field points.

(2)None of the 3 are currently carrying the RM Turbo broadheads or blades......thats what I shot last year but used a gift certificate to buy them from an online store.

(3)I wanted a Schaffer rest, got lucky and found a new one on Ebay.

(4)I wanted the A/C Slim shafts, nobody around carries them in stock, but I eventually found new uncut shafts, although not locally.

(5)I wanted a Viper sight, had to order it because nobody carries them in my area yet.

What I am getting at is............are you as picky with equipment or do you buy what is in stock? Me, I know what I want beforehand and sometimes I want what is not as popular in my area, but many times have to order it. No blame at all to any shops, there is no way they can carry everything without going bankrupt.

No I think once you (any hunter)have decided on equipment that enhances your style of hunting that is what you want and are willing to pay for. Most of the sporting good stores are still looking to and it is necessary to feed that bottom line, so they supply to the masses. I in most cases very rarely ask for help when shopping in most sporting goods store and when I do I am usually standing in front of one of the tech type counters (gunsmith/archery). I have been in many of these stores and actually helped other shoppers make choices based on field related experiences. Sometimes it pays to be picky, sometimes it saves a lot of work and heartache listening to others. Thats one of the main reasons I like this forum. Somehow , somewhere, someone has done it before.

Most archery shops don't carry the things I am looking for. I have to buy most of what I want on line. I think archery shops only stock items they can sell fast. I guess, I can see their reasoning, inventory costs a lot of money just to keep around.

I think attention to details is what makes us bowhunters. I don't know of any of us that "settle" for something we didn't really want. Bowhunters are finicky that way. If what I want isn't in stock for whatever reason, we'll order it and I'll wait. Because if I get something else, it won't be long and it's gone for what I wanted in the first place. I may as well save some cash and get it right the first time.

I get what I want, not what is easiest to find.

Coug, you're not alone. I'm just like you.

I have found, however, that my local shop can order in just about anything I want, and sell it to me for suggested retail price -- and NOT charge any extra shipping costs. When I have the chance, I prefer to do that, since it helps support our local shop and I still get what I want.

I really could care less about my equipment....as long as the arrow flies straight consistently. Been shooting the same set up for years and years and have never lost a deer due to the equipments fault. For me it is doing all I can to understand the deer that I hunt and getting arms length away from them as often as possible.

I am that picky as well. I really prefer to buy in person, but I am not going to shoot inferior equipment to do so. Unfortunately, most everything I buy now is online except for items like releases, etc that must be test driven before being shot, but when I can find a dealer that carries what I want in stock I usually pay more $$$ to buy from them.

I was hoping this was about what deer to shoot. No Cougar your fine on both equipment and your choice of deer. You hunt what you like.

Same here CM, I usually have to special order items...but that's alright, I'm prepared for that each time. One reason I became self sufficient. I usually order extra everything and why I own a bow press, chronograph, bow scale, arrow jig, string jig, serving jig and everything else I need to be my own shop.....

RE: Am I too picky or are all bowhunters this way?

I agree that most serious bowhunters, probably all, are very picky about what they use. We do research in magazines, on line, by talking with our friends, etc and then we figure out what we want. If we have to buy it online then we have to buy it online. Greg/MO had a good point though, if your local shop doesn't carry it, let them know what you are looking for, how much it would cost you to buy online (with shipping) and see if they can get it to you for around the same price. I live in a very small town in the Adirondack Mountains in New York and I do this with not only hunting items, but also every day hardware store itemsat our local hardware store. Even if it is a little more money, keeping business local is what keeps small towns and small businesses alive.

No!

Your not too picky ,because I do the same .If I can't get what I want at my local shop ,then I'll go directly to where I know carries it such as the company who's product you want and buy .First I'll search the internet ,such as ebay or AT and if I can't find it there then I go directly to the source who produce's it .I'm sure most of us do the same ,unless your new to the sport.

I am also as picky, this has become a gr8 place for new info for me, i also use magazine articles and to some extent the tube for new or different products. If I see it in one I look all aver the others to get more info. Then try to do my best with questions here or for myself, but if I need to order direct from the manufacturer online I will do it in a heart beat.

I THINK IT'S JUST THE WAY WE ARE..

No you are not being picky. That's what you should do. You get what you think is best for you, then if something screws up what or who is to blame? Not the equiptment, usually!;)

I just heard recently that Rocky Mountain was bought by another company, and also that the new owner was only gonna keep a handful of RM's heads and discontinue the rest. Can anyone verify this? CougarMag, sorry but maybe that's why you can't find your BH's.

RE: Am I too picky or are all bowhunters this way?

I don't consider that being picky. Matter of fact there is nothing I hate more than having staff in a shop push what they have and bad mouth what they don't. I understand what business is but if you want to lose my business real fast start bad mouthing an item you don't carry. The correct way to deal with a situation like that is enquire about the details and see if they can order it for you. We have a large proshop here who basically waits weeks and even months to place special orders and for that reason he gets very little of my money. I would love to support a local dealer and do as much as I can but the reality is these guys are usually too small and quite often not as informed and up to date as most shooters on here are.
