Exciting bow hunt
 

Though i have hunted with my bow on a number of occassions, i have had limited success. Having already gotten a turkey this season, i decided to hog hunt with my bow this weekend. Our lease has a decent population of hogs, but w/o feeders, they have been very hard to find. However, we recently added feeders and the hogs are far more visible. I ended up stalking several hogs in a pasture by using surrounding cover and the wind. I ended up witha 20 yd shot after slipping up behind a bush. The arrow was well placed if it was a deer but for a hog, i hitthe incredibly tough shield. I wasn't sure the shot would be fatal since the arrow seemed to have limited penetration (about 7-8 inches as it turned out). However, he ran 150 yds and was dead when i found him. Blood trailing was not easy, but i stuck with it, following small drops. The hog was a 190lbs, boar.

Though my shot was fatal, I could see where you might not have good enough penetration when hitting the shield. Where should i be aiming? Is 7-8 inches typical?

I must admit, I was surprised at how fun hog hunting was. The adrenelin rush was far greater than expected.

dont know nothung really about hunting hogs but love to one day,congrats on your bow kill ,i think when hog huning you haveto aim alittle father back because of the plate, you could always post this in the hogg hunting section they should be able to help you:D

We don't have wild hogs in Michigan, until now. A couple of years ago some hogs got loose from a game ranch and now there are between 250 and 300 wild hogs in 6 counties in Michigan. The DNR is freaking out because they say they'll cause major crop damage and destruction. A hunter killed one last year while deer hunting. I want to see them do wellbecause it's one more thing tobowhunt around here! BTW, how do those wild hogs taste?

where abouts in michigan do you live? im near grand rapids but i've never heard anything about hogs gettin loose or anything like that. where did this happen and do you have any other info?(you can pm if you want)

If it's a larger pig wait for a quartering away shot and you can silp the arrow in the sweet spot by sneaking behind the shield. Their hearts are low and forward.

Sounds like an exiting hunt. I can't wait to go pig hunting again, my new lease is supposed to have a healthy population.

Hogs are great with bows. Keep the shot low and behind the shoulder and you will avoid the shield. I have also found quartering away shots tend to do better. It puts the arrow way behind the shield and penetrates the diaphram, liver , lungs and heart, if you put it in the right place. I prefer a quartering away. I have never had a hog travel further than 30 to 40 yards on a quartering away shot, but have tracked them for ever on a broad side with limited penetration.
