I too notice a lull in the middle of October. I think this lull is not because deer are inactive, but I think this is the time of year acorns are dropping and instead of travelling between bedding areas and fields, the may just be staying in the woods and therefore we just dont see them and assume a lull. Stay in the woods and find a good acorn tree.

You cant shoot a big fella' sitting on your couch, so I am out there lull or not.

I usually do not see the mature bucks, in the areas that I hunt, start to move in daylight hours until Oct. 20th. Give or take a couple days. Once, I knew where one was bedded and was hunting him since Oct. 1st. He didn't show himself until 5 minutes before quitting time exactly on Oct. 20th. He was bedding in a small patch of cattails on the edge of a soybean field. I watched from across the field. I think that the bucks are eating and resting up for the rut at this time. Once they disperse from their bachelor groups, they become secretive andmostly nocturnal, until just before the first does start comming into heat. Around Oct. 20th, where I hunt.

Part of the reason daytime activity slows in the middle of Oct. is because deer have started to grow winter hair and temps during the day are too warm. If you get a day where the temps drop to 50 or lower the deer will move earlier. Mark Drury has done studies on this and I to have had good success during those type of days. Just remember any day in the woods is better than any day at work.

I took this mature buck oct 17, 2005. I had been watching several nice bucks come out of a bedding area just before dark and working out to feed. I got several hundred yrds off the bedding area with the wind in the right direction and started hunting the same spot consistanly. After several close calls with nice deer and a ton of 1/1/2 - 2/1/2 year olds coming right by I managed to stick the deer below. From now on in OctI will always look for the big boys bedding area and get as close as I can. All the big deer I seen come off the bedding area waswithonly about 15-20 min. of shooting light left.

Mid October is a great time to hunt food plots and do some deer management. Get out and fill the freezers full of does. Besides, you never know.....the buck of your dreams may walk by on Oct. 19. If you're not there, you'll never know. ;)

There is no bad time to go hunting. Get out there and enjoy!

Any time you are in a stand is great!!!!!! It could happen at an time. If you can just go and sit as long as you can stand it, then sit 1 more hour. Man I can't wait already and I'm not getting any younger. I got to keep wishing my life away between seasons.
