Okay, don't laugh, but I'm a lady that's getting ready to start bow hunting. I've been hunting before once. I loved it! I was just wandering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get started b/c I have no clue. I'm not real interested in guns, but I have used a compound bow before and I was pretty good. I realize it's hard to kill a deer with a bow b/c you have to be real quiet, and I've heard it's all in the techniques. Any suggestions... what do I need to get started???

KEL,

My best suggestion would be to go to an archery shop in your area and ask for some equipment assistance. Leave the checkbook at home, but take notes on what they say you need. Come back here, and the folks on the Board should be able to make sure you're not being "taken". Then, go back and get your stuff.

Also, if possible, join an archery club in your area. most have leagues and lessons available. Make full use of them.

Lastly, read EVERYTHING you can about bowhunting, and spend a lot of time in the woods learning animal behavior. If nothing else, it's very relaxing.

By the way, there's no reason to laugh. We all started somewhere, and women are every bit as effective bowhunters as men. Bowhunting's not supposed to be some "old boys club", it's a family passtime. As a side note, I know for a fact that my grandmother's killed more deer with a bow than some folks here. I don't say that to insult anyone, but rather to point out that gender matters not in bowhunting.

Well, I think I'll be good. I'm not your typical girly girl. I'm gonna start going with my husband. We are firefighters together and was looking for something else fun to enjoy together. I appreciate your advice. I think all my Christmas this year will be hunting stuff.

I just thought someone might think it was funny. I tend to be the butt of the jokes at the fire dept, but they all know I can take it. They call me "cheif" b/c I get in there and work circles around them.

NE ways, back to hunting. I'll probably go this weekend to check out some archery stores. I just don't want to sound stupid when I go in.

THanks!
Kel

Kel-Welcome to the board....there is a lot of good information on here....just pick and choose what work's for you....I'am not laughing at you...I'm laughing at the looks on the faces of those fireman when you pull up to the station and go in and ask for help to get your first "BUCK" out of the back of your truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kel,

you can also goto www.tnugent.com

Ted Nugent's wife, Shamane has an excellant record with helping getting women into hunting & shooting. She has what she calls the "Queen of the Forest Empowerment Program". They have thier own section on the message board over there, and I can guarentee that you will be able to find some woman that are in the same "stage" as you, or were just shortly ago.

Just follow that link, on the left hand side, scroll down to "Communicate" - there is a link called "Talk Back" - that's the message board - you will see the Queen of the Forest link there.

Good Luck!!!!!

I'm glad to see women get into the sport there is nothing like it. Lady Forge has had sucess this year. Just wish we could hear more from the other gender. Good luck and it sounds like you are on the right track.

You might also try the Women in the Outdoors program, there may be other women hunters in your area that can help you along.

Just out of curiosity you mentioned you were going to "start going with my husband", does that mean you are both new to bowhunting or has he been doing it a while. Just not sure if he's not helping you with this or you just want to do it on your own or what?

Definitely talk to a few people before you buy a lot of equipment, as sad as it is some people out there will take advantage of you just because you are a woman.

Welcome Kel; I was introduced to Archery by my husband. I spent a few years shooting 3D trying to perfect my skill. I had a great teacher in my husband and my local Archery club was a fountain of knowledge and inspiration to me.The folks at the Archery Club always seem more than happy to help out a fellow archer. And yet I am still learning new things everyday, and sometimes I still have to learn things the hard way, by making my own mistakes. I hope you also can find a good bunch of people in your area to help you out.And if the hubby is a experienced bow hunter you have a live in teacher.JRW made a good point , leave the checkbook at home, until you know if what they are trying to sell you is really what you need. This board is a great place, you can learn alot here, I still do all the time. Good Luck and Happy Hunting
