Bow stand types for west-cent. Tx
I hunt out in west-central Texas and am thinking of putting a couple of "portable" tripod stands out a few months before season(more of a permanent type situation).
Plan to use these for bow hunting as I prefer the 100-250 yd shots with rifle and already have box blinds set up in the chosen locations. I was wondering if anyone here has used these successfully for bowhunting and if they had some pointers for me. I know that cover is key and putting it as far up against a tree as possible is vital. There are NO spots for climbers(other than telephone poles which are pointless). Most of the trees that are strong enough for a chain on are crooked as a politician. Ladder stands are ok, but I like the idea of a 360 deg. swiveling chair. I thought of getting a boat seat and a swivel/pedastal and bolting it to the top of a lean-to ladder stand. By the time I do that I could have just bought Tripods it seems. Any thoughts? |

I've thought of the same type of stand cause some places i hunt are blow downs or sometimes a tree just ain;t big enuff to put a stand in, and in some other areas the tree dictates my location, in which I have to settle for sometimes, so I can see an advantage in that type set up, but the ones I've seen in Cabelas and BP are more than a 100 #'s so a couple trips would be required to get it back into the bush. Go for it and let me know.

You need to check out Game Tamers. I have hunted from their lock-on style and they are very sturdy, comfortable, and they are made for crooked trees. I'm buying one for myself this year.
They are heavy, but they are awesome. They also have quadpods. http://www.gametamers.com/index.html |

We use the Strongbuilt tripods at our lease in Blackwell (Nolan County) mostly the 10 and 12' models. They can be picked up for just over $100. Just find you a decent sized oak, mequite or cedar to put in/against and you're good to go.
Lately I've been hunting out of ground blinds, both pop up and homemade and I really like hunting out of them. It's nice because you can stretch out a bit more, have penty of room for all of your stuff, get up and stretch every once in a while, help contain your scent better and if you brush it in good, the deer have no clue. |

Ground blind definitely has some perks. I'm just fond of being up high. I thought about buying some of the "cheap" camo burlap and draping around some trees in the thickets. I did this alot when I first started bow hunting as a kid with some success. Never got a kill with it.. in point of fact I have yet to get my first bow kill... but had some deer walk out beside me so close I'd be better off with a baseball bat than a bow. Talk about adrenaline rush.
