Ever Had Sucess WIth Estrous Scent On Mature Deer?

I am curious to see if anyone has ever had sucess with Estrous type lures/scents on mature bucks? If so what type of lure/scent did you use and how did it help your hunt? Do these lures work best used as a trail drag, placed in active scrapes or just used in scent dispencers?

Personally I have not had any success with these types of lures. I have used many brands and haven't had a positive response from a mature deer. It did cost me a shot at a nice 10 pointer last year as the doe he was following was coming by my stand smelled the scent and spooked.

RE: Ever Had Sucess WIth Estrous Scent On Mature Deer?

I have experimented over the 20 years with various
brands of doe in heat scents. For some reason some work and some
dont. Some that seem to work for me are Tinks69, and scents from Wildlife Research. I did find that you get what you pay for. The cheaper brands dont seem to work very well.
I use cotton Q-Tips and dip the tips in the scent.
I then bend the tips in a V shape and place them on branches along scrape lines etc. Ive found that using just a little scent works
much better than alot. After hunting I place the q-tips in a 35mm filmcanister.

RE: Ever Had Sucess WIth Estrous Scent On Mature Deer?

Have used many different estrous scents over the years, only had success that I can directly relate to the scent three times. First one resulted in a nice 8 point, second a big bodied 11 point, just shy of p&y if one was concerned with such things, 3rd a passed opportunity...

8 point- Put a boot pad on, scented it, walked to my stand up a ridge finger, put a canister of the scent at the base of my tree with my pad, climbed up, settled it. 30 mintes later, heard a snap. Looked down, the 8 point had his nose on my boot pad, then the canister, then the pad. He turned, walked away, smelling every step I'd taken with the pad. I shot him with my shotgun at about 20 yards. Scent? Buck Stop 200 Proof.

11 point- Tied a scent wick onto a long stick, scented it, took off to my stand 1/4 mile away, walking along the edge of a timber in clover, hitting the ground about every three fee with the wick. Re-scented along the way, worked my way to my stand. Put the wick past my tree, climbed up, settled it. 4 hours later, right before sundown, I glance to the field, 11 pointer walking in my trail, putting his nose in every place I hit with the wick. He came right to my tree, towards the wick. He caught me moving during my draw, and started to trot up a hill, and I let out my best estrous bleat. He stopped dead, looked back, I dropped him with my bow, I was leaning around a tree limb, canted the bow and spined him. Scent? Buck Stop 200 proof.

3rd- Hit my stand in a travel corridor funnel early am. Drug a rag in soaked in scent. Past my tree with it, climbed up, put a wick out up in the tree with me, saturated it with scent. Settled in. Heard a deer coming through, he was downwind, but I thought I was up high enough my scent (I practice strict scent control and use scentlok) would float over him, he just stopped dead down wind. Finally got light enough to see, a really nice young 12 point, tall rack and decent width, but not much mass yet. He was broadside at 20 yards, head in the breeze, sucking in scent. He stood there doing this for at least 20 minutes. Finally, he took a few steps, and hit my drag line. He followed it right past my tree, coulda stuck him a million times at 15 yards, but passed. It was my first day out, the weather was perfect and I'd been seeing much larger deer in the area. He finally rambled on. Scent? Buck Stop 200 Proof.

This year I haven't bought any yet. In fact I spent $15 on some local deer herd product recommended by an area proshop. I'm such an idiot. This stuff is the only scent I have seen a mature buck react to in a way that led me to believe he was actually looking for a hot doe. I know they say pheremones don't live past a few minutes at most, but there is something in this crap that they abolutely love. I must find more...
