Hang On Stands/Climbing Sticks
 

Hey guys I've been looking over all different types of hang on stands and climbing stick combinations. Just wondering which ones are safe, reliable and affordable. I want safety and comfort but at the same time I can't afford an arm and leg for 3 or 4 of these stand setups, which is what I desire to have by opening day.

I usually get a good lock on, I actually have several, but I use the Wal-Mart sticks. They're alot cheaper than the brand names and they work great.

I am a big fan of the Chippewa wedgeloc stands.I cannot compromise comfort for the price of these stands.I have two and will probably buy another soon.Also I use API climbing sticks,they are quick and easy to hang,light and affordable.Gorilla makes a decent climbing sticck set up but they are alot heavier,and cost more.I'll try to find a link for all of these.BTW the wedgeloc stands,are as easy to hang as "loc on"brand.I sold/ got rid of two loc-ons last season,I hated them.They where so uncomfortable.Oh yea another decent stand that I have ,and is reasonably priced and comfy is API's baby grand.

There are a lot of good safe hang-on stands available. About the only thing that raises the price of one so much above the next is materials and weight. If you need light, you'll pay more for the aluminums. Steel is cheaper and heavier. The sticks are the same pretty much. The simpler the design...the cheaper they are. Are far as "SAFETY".... with hang ons you're never really safe unless you're hooked up from the minute you leave the ground. There are only a couple ways to do this. I guess the "Climbing System" with the descender ropes made by (I forget) is the safest...but it'll cost you a few bucks. You can get a decent climber for $200-250 with the more Brand name jobs running up to $350 with all the bads and seats etc. If you can put them in there are ladders for probably $150 that are fairly comfortable but you're restricted with height. Even with climbing sticks I often end up with some screw in steps above the sticks. Anything you use you have to be hooked up the minute you leave the ground to be safe. 90 percent of treestand accidents occur when people are climbing up to or climbing down from and not hooked up. 90 percent is a pretty eliminateable statistic if people would just hook up, but they always figure it won't happen to them. Every guy who ever fell thought it wouldn't happen to him.

Ya know I feel the same way you do but for different reasons. I use the Wal-Mart stands and I use Dicks climbing ladders. Now my reasons for this is I hate taking down and setting up stands and sticks not because I'm lazy but I want to be as quiet as I can but I don't want to give a thief the best there is and belive me if you always leave yur stuff in the woods eventually your going to get hit. The cost is about $80.00 for the stand and the stiks combined so you can afford to get multible sets. As far as the weight goes If you use the straps on the sticks and strap the sticks to the stand then make you some back pack straps for the stand you will be able to carry this package in the woods and carry it for quite a ways and its not bad like this at all. I am 52 years old and can carry it for a mile and my 72 year old hunting partner can go for a while like this too so you see what I mean. Now these stands are very safe and comfortable I sit in them for hours. Its up to you if you want to spend your money for a little less weight or get 3 set-ups that you woud pay for one of the other. I use climbing sticks by River's edge. There light and affordable.
As for my fixed treestands I have 1 Lone Wolf & 1 crows nest.

Drstalker..... NOPE... here's the one I'm talking about made by summit. I bought one as an emergency exit if my climber broke and left me hanging..
