what do you think is slow for a bow

i would say anyhing under 250fps

RE: what is slow to you

My current hunting bow flings an arrow at 180 fps.

My bowfishing bow fires a bowfishing arrow at 110fps.

Those seem pretty slow.. but the arrows are usually faster than the deer or fish. ;)

Anything under 200 fps with a lighter set up like mine. For an average set up probably 250 and below would be slow by today's standards.

Lots of variables of course.. but to me it's not really slow at 250. Probably wouldn't call it real slow until you got down toward 225 or below. Of course, that's compounds. Recurves etc... 180 or below.

Slow is a compound bow that flings a heavy arrow at 210fps or maybe less. I can remember taking 40 yard shots with my old PSE and watching the arrow sail out there like a football pass! ;)

RE: what is slow to you

Depends on the draw length, draw weight, and arrow weight if you are looking at actual speeds.

If person A is shooting a 700 grain arrow at 220 fps you may think that is slow if you didn't know the weight of the arrow. However when you consider the arrow weighs 700 grains then it becomes clear that it is actually a pretty fast set up for that arrow.

Translate into numbers that most hunters use. A 400 grain arrow would be moving along at about 290 fps. out of that same bow.

If you want a better guide of how fast or slow a bow is then look at the AMO speeds. A 60 pound bow shooting a 540 grain arrow at about 230 fps is about average. Shooting the same draw weight and arrow weight at 245 fps is smoking fast and would be about a 325 fps IBO rating.

Basically it's all relative. ;)

I get my 650 grain arrows up to about 180 out of my longbow. it is awsome to watch the flight of the arrow then hear the loud thud when it connects that always brings a smile to my face.:)

under 200fps is slow

For the average bow and average hunter I would agree with David that anything under 225 fps is relatively slow. It would be curious to see what the average speed is out there right now for a hunting setup.

RE: what is slow to you

I just chrony'd my 70 lb. UltraTech and it's shooting a 500 gr. arrow at 250 fps. I consider that moderately fast. My longbow shoots the same arrow at 190 which I also consider moderately fast (for a longbow). Now my 3-d rig shoots a 300gr. arrow at 325fps., that's rediculously fast. So I guess my answer to the question would be; it depends.

I think most people would be surprised if they actually shot their bows through a chronograph at how slow they are compared to what you may think they are. Big bulls hit it on the head though; it's all relative.

When it hits the ground it just went to slow.

My old Browning Tornado shot 246 fps. I considered that to be slow. My buddy shot my arrows thru his Matthews and he was shooting 271fps, with the same draw length, weight, etc.

I can't shoot my new Hoyt Trykon yet, due to my shoulder injury, but once I shoot that, I don't think I'll have a slow bow anymore. :D

My reflex shoots 225 fps turned all the way down.

You guys giving your arrow speeds, please also post the weight of your bow and grains of the arrow. I'm curious. :)

My 180fps is from a 12 year old XI with little bitty round wheels set at 50lbs and tossing a 520 grain arrow.

(my 110fps is from a 40lb Oneida with a 1500+ grain fish arrow)

155 fps is pretty slow. I probably shoot in the 170's to 180's with most of mine
