Bow for wife
So my wife was hanging out with me today while I was target shooting and she said that looked like a fun way to get some exercise... She also said she would be interested in target shooting for fun and a good workout.
So where do I get started... I don't want to spend too much, as she will never hunt with a bow and if she ever got that serious, I would get here something better. I would still like it to be a quality compound bow, no really cheap plastic thing. Also what weight to start her at? She only weighs 115 pounds, but is very physically fit for her size. Thanks! |
RE: Bow for wife
You know when I read your subject line I thought you would trade your wife for a bow, LOL

RE: Bow for wife
Get her a fully rigged Switchback with all the bells and whistles, then when she quits in two weeks you got yourself a sweet setup. Trust me this will work.

RE: Bow for wife
Dude you enjoy your time on the range or in the stand? Dont get her started or she will be with ya 24/7! FACT been there doing that!

Sorry to say this TeeJay, but that is probably one of the most ignorant things to say, not to mention selfish. With hunting under attack we need as many women and children in our sport as possible. Plus time spent with your wife shooting, hunting, or in the outdoors is quality time together. My wife and I spend as much time together outdoors as possible, she has become myfavorite hunting partner. p.s. I won't mention what she called you when she read your post. |

Sorry to say this TeeJay, but that is probably one of the most ignorant things to say, not to mention selfish. Newguy, takeyour wife to the shop to get fitted with draw weight and draw length, then advise her butlet her make her own choiceonwhat bowshe wants to shoot.A variety of reasons for that. She will be involved from the get go and that will keep her interest level up. She will be able to decide what feels most comfortable for her and we all know we shoot best with a bow that fits well and 'feels right.' And, if you have made all the decisions and it doesn't work out, then you're in the doghouse. If you let hermake the decisions, you're off the hook because it was all her idea. ;) |

RE: Bow for wife
My wife shoots a Browning Micro Adernaline in 30-40 lbs. The draw length is adjustable from 18-28". The price was very reasonablebrand new on Ebay (~$220). She shoots it well and I highly recommend it for a female/small frame maleshooter. She shoots PSE Carbon Force 300 arrows and a Whisker Biscuit. I wish I had this rig back when I was 14 years old!

RE: Bow for wife
Alright lets set some things straight! First of all if you enjoy spending every waking moment with your mate, more power to ya. But you are living a fairy tale! I got my g/friend into bird hunting first.....now i cant leave home with out her. Then it was ice fishing, yep you got it! Now it is Archery, yep same ol! So now when we plan a hunting/fishing trip guess who gets the 3rd degree at home if he doesnt ask? I also hunt with a couple of good ol boys that have old fashoned beliefes about women in hunting camp. So you guessed it i did NOT get invited on the colorado elk hunt this last fall! I enjoy hunting and fishing with her, just not all the time! To much of a good thing, can be a bad thing trust me!

Her complaining everytime you left because she hated hunting? 3. So you couldn't find others to go out west with? Big deal if they didn't invite you because of her. Sounds like you need some new friends. All I'm saying is, you have it pretty good compared to the alternative. |
RE: Bow for wife
You didn't get much advice here on what to look at, so I will throw my opinion in.
Two bows I would consider looking at are the Alpine Micro and the Rintec by hoyt. The Jennings Rack Master light is pretty nice as well. Hoyt and bowtech have some nice womens bows that are more expensive, but you said you were looking for affordable. Here is my girlfriends bow I got her last year. It is an Alpine micro that I think I paid $190 for. ![]() Here is a link to a thread I started a while ago after she had been shooting for a while. It has a few more pics. I think she is getting it! As far as shooting with your wife, I love the fact that my Girlfriend shoots with me. This way when my buddies and I shoot she can be part of it and doesn't feel left out. It is also something we can do together when at home. I want to get her kids into it as well. She has no desire to hunt though, at least not bow hunt. I think I could talk her into gun hunting out of a blind though. I'm almost sure I could talk her into turkey hunting if I could get her to shoot a shotgun. She shoots well enough that I am getting her a rintec in target colors for her birthday next week. We were at fairly local shop in the next state over and they have 4 models in stock in target colors, three of which she really liked. The rintecs are $380 for target colors and $300 for camo. They shoot much nicer than Alpine micro as far as felt recoil and and the such, but they are 100 bucks more as well. She looked at a rintec when we got the alpine, but for some reason she liked the alpine better. Now that she has been shooting for a while she has changed her mind[:o];). Maybe the fact that I can more afford it now makes a difference. I have a better job now and have been working a fair amount overtime. I like the alpine enough that I might keep it for myself or to teach others to shoot with since it is so adjustable for draw length and is lighter in draw weight. I agree with the above, do not get her one as a suprise. Take her to a shop and let her try a few and let them set some up for her and let her decide. Paul |
RE: Bow for wife
I just got my wife into archery and we get her a Hoyt Selena and she loves it. They are made just for women shooters and I think all together we paid $600 and that is with all the goodies. the bow it self runs about $475.

RE: Bow for wife
Take a look at the Bowtech line, they have some good bows for women and small shooters,my wife liked the TomKat,brother-in-laws GF liked the equalizer.
Diamond has some good bows,Browning and Hoyt. Let her shoot some diffrent ones and let her decide. My wife did the same thing see watched for about a year and decided thats she wanted to doit, now I can't stop her,3-d shoots,Leauges, hunter safety, can't drive by a pro shop with out stopping to see what new things they have. BBJ P.S. I enjoy time with my wife, weather were elk hunting of in the back yard trying to rooobinhood each others arrows. |
RE: Bow for wife
Well I have to say Im happy for yall that love spending all your free time with your sig. other! Congrats to ya! Call me selfish. Call me arogant, ignorent whatever I like a little alone time! I like spending time with the fellas. I like spending time burping, farting and telling ronchy jokes! I dont know about yall, but I cant do all that if there is a lady present. I dont mind taking her with on occasion, I just dont want to have her with all the dang time. Do yall go shopping with your women everytime she heads for the mall? Does she want you with every time she heads for the mall? Does that make either one or you ignorent or arogent? Because boy if you dont want to take her with to the woods you are a shovanistic pig according to some of ya!!!!!

RE: Bow for wife
My girlfriend is shooting a Parker Micro Phoenix in 40 - 50 lb. draw. She got it as a hunting bow but I've got to say that it is damn impressive as a target bow as well. If yours is just going to use it for target I would recommend less weight (30-40lb.)

RE: Bow for wife
I was talking to someone about this today and they suggested the genesis... Any thoughts?

RE: Bow for wife
If you were going to get something like that I would get the genisis pro because it has an adjustable stop. However for the same money you could get the Alpine Micro or one of the brownings and they would be a better bow for what you want to do. The genisis is a great bow, but was designed more for clubs or groups of young archers. Sort of like a high tech recurve. Something you can shoot and hand to another person and they can shoot it.
If your wife is for real about wanting to shoot you should get her a dedicated bow that can be set up to her specs and will have enough power to at least target shoot. Not that the genisis doesn't, but it's max will equal the lowest setting on one of the other bows. If you had two or three kids and they all wanted to shoot I would say get the genisis, other wise it wouldn't be my first pick. It was one of the options when my girlfriend was looking at bows and we ruled it out pretty quick. Best bang for the buck is the Rintec by hoyt in my opinion. My girl is getting antsy to go get hers, but she is just going to have to wait until Friday. Paul |
RE: Bow for wife
Oh, I misunderstood...I thought you were looking to trade (I was gonna ask you what kind of bow?)!

RE: Bow for wife
I have 2 daughters (15 & 30) I have outfitted with the Fred Bear Sparrowhawk lls. Around $200 each from Cabela's.You mentioned cost.
They love them. Adjusts to 45#s which is fine for both of them & plenty for Whitetail. Neither could handle much more pulling weight. They shoot Easton Aluminum 2018 Arrows, 3 blade Rocky Mountain 125gr. Broadheads & release.I will be taking them on a off season hog hunt in the future& this is one of the toughest animals you can encounter with a bow. This is my 5oth year in Bowhunting & am confident they will do fine on the hogs with this set up. Good Luck in whatever you choose. |
RE: Bow for wife
I bought myfianceea Browning Adrenaline. It's a great bow. She really likes it and does well for her. We haven't went hunting with it yet though.
