Smelly Deer Mount

Hey guys,
I'm sure someone can help me out here. I recently recieved my buck mount back from the taxidermist, but as soon as I got it home the thing had a slight smell. It's not strong, but it def. has a smell. I was wondering if any of you guys have had this problem and if so, what did you do about it.

My first thought was that the taxidermist forgot a step in the process of cleaning the hide, but I'm not sure.

Any help is appreciated.

Could be alot of things, call him up and tell him the problem. I bet he will take care of it for you. You might ask this in the taxidermy section and the pros will help you there.

Pour some Calvin Klein lotion on it maybe that will help!,,, :Dno just a joke
call your taxidermy studio and let them know, before anything happens.

I've only had one deer mounted, but mine had a smell as well. It wasn't a bad smell, but more of a chemical smell of some sort. Anyway, it has faded, and you don't smell it unless you get up real close.
I imagine it is normal from the process.

If it smells like rotten flesh, then your taxidermist did a poor job fleshing it, and he used a dry tan which is a poor way to tan

Thx for the replys. The only reason I didn't post in that section is because I'd never go back and check it. This is mainly the topic I'm in and a lot of yall have experience.

I am going to give the guy a call on monday just to see what I can do. I had to end up putting the thing in the attic cause it smelled up my place.

Double def. give the taxidermists a call.
I might have apossible explanation for you, doing taxidermy myself. I've noticed over the yrs that some deer just have more smell to them when I recieve the hide. Sometimes the smell is a result of large chunks of meat being left on the hide, andmeat beginning to spoil. That smell often gets into the hide. Of course time, and temperatures play apart of that. The sooner the taxdermists can recieve your cape from time of kill, the better it is for them. Another reason for the smell is the oder rutting bucks put out, which can become real strong as well.
Most taxidermists put the hide through a cleaning solution during the tan process. Plus I do know their are deodorizers available for mounts. Most smells can be taken care of, and fade with time. Hopefully barring any ill effects taken by your taxidermists your mount can also be fine.
