Cold weahter clothing
 

I need to prepare for a cold weather hunt and need advice on clothing without giving my arm, leg, kidney, or liver. Temp should be around +20 and down to -15 range. Snow. I only bowhunt, so I can't have bulky clothes but need to stay warm. Cabela's article can run you easily over $1,000.00. Any help would be appreeciated.

Layers are the key. I have found that those "Lycra" stretch pants that you see runners/aerobics people wear are a good base layer (kinda funny looking but keep you warm and wick moisture away). Next, I found a set of Expedition Weight Thermals at Dick's Sporting Goods for $40-50 to wear over the Lycra....after that, you decide what will be most comfortable. I Picked up a great Walls 1 piece camo suit for $99 that I wear as my outermost layer when its really cold. I have found that 3-4 layers of thinner clothing keeps me warmer than 2-3 of thicker clothes. Don't go and spend a lot of $$$$- buy smart and you can do it for around $200-300.

Get some army surplus wool pants to wear under your camo and a good wool sweater with windstopper to wear under your camo coat. The pants will probably be less than $20 and are very warm. You can wear whatever weight of long underwear under them you need. A neck gaiter will really help also. The sweater might run you close to $100 but is worth it. I have hunted late season for over 20 years and have found this combo to work great. Dont forget warm boots. If your feet get cold you are done.

Light layers of wool and fleece work for me. I also agree with the lycra, too. Wool and fleece seem to keep me warm even when I get wet.

Check out Sierra Trading Post for some super deals on all that stuff. It is the only place I buy the thermax, lycra, polarfleece etc. If you are patient you can catch deals for up to 75% off list
Never had a problem with any of thier goods. They are a liquidator for all the major mfgrs like Browning, Rocky boot, Columbia etc

I don't know the name of them but some of those gloves that are separate fingers with a goretex pullover mitten are great.

i have your answer in about $400. go but columbis silent hunter widgen parka and the slient hunter bibs. they are breathable, waterproof, and wind proof. if you will be doing alot of walking you won't need but a pair of pants and shirt to wear under. if you will be stand hunting where a pair of wool paints or polypro undies. this setup is supper warm. watch yourself walking with it on, you will get hot and sweat.

by the way, columbia product are garenteed for life. and the company actually does follow through on their promise.

OK when it's cold I like to wear a couple of layers of expedition weight Thermax long underwear. They keep you warm and wick away any moisture if you should do some walking and start to sweat. Over that a layer of wool followed by an insulated windproof jacket. For hands the fold over glove/mittens mentioned by Sooner are great. Mittens really keep your hands much warmer than glowes and you can quickly and easily fold them back to shoot. I also like to stick a small heat pack inside each one on really cold days. Another great thing to wear is a polarfleece baclava. The long kind that you can fold back up inside itself for a face shield. Those things hold your body heat in like no other and with the botto tucked into your jacket it helps keep all the heat in. For your feet wear a wool blend sock and get some good cold weather boots with at least 1000 grams of thinsulate.
