Climbers--To Noisy?
80% of the time i am hunting i use a climber stand. But im not sure if the stand is to loud. When i am setting it up perhaps i am making to much noise and thats why im not seeing deer. But i like my climber because i can never seem to be happy with permanant stand placement so i dont like to sit in them to much. What do you think about climbers?

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
Given any major brand of climber and someone with a little bit of practice and you should be able to climb a tree and get ready with no more noise than a squirrel makes. Many times I have climbed up or down a tree with deer in close eye sight.
Some things are true whether you believe them or not. |

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
Keep on climbing! When you get to the base of the tree you plan to set up on,The deer arn't going to wait until you start climbing to get spooked....I believe they will have already heard or seen you and have already been spooked. If you make it to the tree without being detected, I bet ( most of the time )you'll have time to set up with out further detection.....

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
In my opion you can get busted climbing into a portable stand. Sooner do you have a climber? The woods here just doesn't seem thick enough to find trees without a lot of branches. Just wondering.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
I use a Summit Cobra XL. It's as quiet as I can be. They're also very quiet once in place, when I move around.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
I have a Lone Wolf climber and it it very quiet...just a little pricey.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
Doubt the noise is the reason. 1 trip I was on I made all sorts of noise with my climber. I figgured..."aw crap, I scared every deer in the county away" 20 minutes or so later I had deer all around me. Just stick with it

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
I love my climber for staging areas in open woodlands, and for setting up on escape routes during gun season. But...I'd also make sure I had one or two good hang on's for close to bedding areas that are set up ahead of time. Where I shot my buck last weekend, its too thick to go in with a climber, find a straight tree that allows good visibility, and to set up quietly enough to not alert deer that might be bedded less than 100 yds away - no way!.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
I probably make a little more noise with my climber than I should but I think the key is going in early and allowing enought time for things to settle down. If I'm hunting in the morning I'll go in well before sunrise (assuming I can drag my butt out of bed). And when I hunt in the evening, if I know deer are moving around 5 or 6 then I'll get set up around 3 or so.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
I bought a new climber, a cheap Walmart brand (three kids=no cash) and then modified the climbing teeth. I was really noisy opening morning and had a hard time getting set up. I finally started climbing and was up about 8 feet when I felt something watching me. There was a very nice wide 3x3 watching me not 12 yards away. My bow was still on the ground. I started pulling up my bow, got it, unhooked it, took an arrow out of the quiver, nocked it, and then just as I was about at full draw the limb hit the metal on the stand and he lit out. Deer are curious.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
I have a summit cobra. it has the snake cable, and is fairly quiet climbin a tree. IMO- the best stands for quietness are the hang-ons.
you can slip in and climb your ladder without makin a sound. I have three of those i leave in the same places year round. their around acorn trees in funnels. I use my cobra for sneakin in on hot spots like scrapes, fresh rublines etc. IMO- the quitest climbers on the market are the summits, the API, and the old man. daytona 500 winner- Ward Burton go Cat-22 |
RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
IMHO the loudest part of using my climber (Summit Viper) is attaching it to the tree. My cable has lost about 40% of the rubber coating on it and makes some metal-2-metal sound when sliding it into the frame. After that, its up the tree quiet as a church mouse.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
I think any metal to metal noise may carry fairly far in the woods. But the sound of scurrying up a tree does not travel far at all.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
They are noisy, more trouble than they are worth, unsafe, tear up trees, etc, etc.
I don't have one and don't want one. Stupidest thing they ever made for hunting my opinion. |
RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
About 95% of the deer I've killed was from a climber. I have a really nice box stand that I built to take my 7 year old son hunting in but if he's not with me I'll be in the climber.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
My first climber was one of the old Baker's. It was quite noisy and I eventually switched to a pin-mounted fixed position stand more than 10 years ago. This year, I just bought an Ol' Man climber and it's very quiet going up and absolutely silent when set. I have had some problems with noise during the walk in, but I am gradually finding the sources and eliminating the problems.

RE: Climbers--To Noisy?
Climbers are noisy, but I don't think most of the noise bothers deer much. I can't tell you how many times on the way up or the way down, I stop and look around and see deer that are paying no attention to me.
I have a Summit Cobra and I don't think I've ever attached it to a tree without substantial noise getting the cable back in. Also, virtually evey time, the seat section falls and bangs against the foot section, while I'm getting onto the stand. All this and I still see deer right away, many times. If you're not seeing deer, most likely either the wind is wrong, you're moving too much or you're not set up in the right spots. |
