Is it too early to rattle????
 

I hunt in southern Missouri and do you think it is too early to start rattling? The area I hunt in years past has never had much buck sign but I always see them there, so it is hard to tell if they have started making sign.

Well I cant tell ya about missouri but here in north dakota, i saw two bucks doing some light fighting, so next time I am out i am gonna do some light rattling.

I think its always wirth a try if the situation and location is right.

the earliest I have rattled in a buck was Oct. 2nd and that was this year.

I just posted about basket bucks in my backyard, a 5x5 and a 4x4. After scoping them for a while from the kitchen I went out the front door on the opposite side of the house and a few yards into the woods and started rattling. I didn't have a jacket on in it was in the low 40's, so I only rattled a short while until I got up to go back in. It just so happened that they were sneaking back around to me and were 30 yards off behind a thick stand of dogwood saplings where I couldn't see them, but they were coming around for a look.

I don't think it's ever too early to rattle as long as a fair number of bucks are out of velvet and the situation and conditions are favorable. But I seriously believe that late in the season, say the tail-end of the rut and later can be too LATE. By then the hierarchy within the buck population is well established and the majority of receptive does have been bred.

That's just my thoughts due to the observations I have made in the areas that I hunt. Different areas, different results. And as always, there are exceptions to every rule.
