College Paper- NEED INPUT!
Hey guys:
I'm doing a paper on the rising costs of licenses here in Indiana. Kind of wondering what license prices are for deer tags in your states so I have a comparison. Our paper has to be on something that has an economic impact. My teacher said my topic would be great to cover. Just need some input and maybe some ideas. I'd appreciate it guys. Thanks so much. RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
In Ohio it's $19.00 for a hunting license, $24.00 for a deer tag. There are other prices for groups like seniors and youths, but those are the basic prices
|
RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
In Massachusetts:
A resident Hunting License costs $27 ** Non resident Hunting License costs $99.50 ** **License includes 2 buck tags. Cannot purchase addtl buck tags. Antlerless permits: $5 Archery stamp: $5 *req'd to hunt with a bow during any season Muzzleloader stamp: $5 *req'd for muzzleloader season |
RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
If you care about Ontario Canada:
Moose Deer Bear Turkey Resident $42$35$35 $22 Non-Res$350 $175$175$22 Its illegal for us to walk thru the bush with a firearm (including a bow) without a small game permit - $19. These prices are for one animal, you can buy additional for bow only deer in some areas, bear gun in some areas, and a 2nd turkey. Idon't have stats to back itup but I'm pretty sure the economicimpact of huntingis seen more in gas, hotels, gear, guiding etc. than what the government takesonly to turn around and waste it. |
RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
I think your best bet would be to check out other states DNR websites.
|
RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
I would hit the web sites also. Like mich dnr web site, they are soon to have talks in regards to raising fees due to budget deficits. Last price hike they had was 1996. Or so they say.

RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
I haven't read all the responses, so forgive me if I'msaying something someone else has already covered...
I know Illinois has hampered their "economic impact" by raising their non-resident archery tags to ridiculous rates. I know it's effecting local businessmen, because I hear small business owners complaining incessantly. To make your paper the best it could be, be sure to interview and include quotes from area hotel owners, restaurant owners and others that would be directly affected by those costs you referred to. When I first started hunting Illinois four or five years ago, a non-resident tag cost me $120. This past year's was over $400 by the time I bought the mandatory small-game permit and habitat stamp. You do the math, but that's an outrageous figure, whatever it comes out to be percentage-wise! Compare it to a typical inflation rate, and you'll see it's truly ridiculous. |
RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
PA is $20 for adult hunting license
$16 archery $11 muzzleloader $11 bear $15 Duck stamp (i think) $3 migratory game bird (the last time i bought it 2 yrs ago) $6 a piece for doe tags $21 if you want another gobbler tag this year these are resident prices if my mind is correct. |
RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
bowtech, if you want to find a link to every DNR listing, look to the top of the page/ under resources/ DNR Listings... Hunting.net has every state listing.

RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
You do understand of course that hunting licenses for INSTATE are still one of the best buys in the world don't you. They have NO economic impact to speak of. It's not enough to keep the dwindling personnel they have now. That said, if you really want to go through all the states...set up a data base and cruise all the sites. A good place is to use(GOD I hate to mention him) Jackie Bushwachers site. It has a link to all the states. IF yo browse the states you'll find license cost etc.

RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
ORIGINAL: bowtech die hard ...Just need some input and maybe some ideas. I'd appreciate it guys. Thanks so much. Tim IMHO, citing the costs of licenses in other states should not get you too faras developing any cause and effect relationship of risinglicensing costs having an "economic impact" in Indiana. Are you refering to impact on the hunters, the Natural Resources Department, orthe local economy that spins off hunting activities? Here's some ideas: Easy Project: Determine if the higher cost of licenses over time is reducing the real income to the Indiana Dept of Natural Resources.(Impact: fewer dollars could lead to lessor poorer wildlife management). Basic approach: calculate the (real) income generated from license sales in Indiana over time. Steps: Find the costs of Indiana resident and nonresident licenses for 1980, '85, '90, '95, 2000, '05. Adjust the license costs for inflation.(chooseor not to include new fees that may have come along such as (?) bonus deertags, HIP, or whatever). Find outhow many resident and nonresident liscenses were sold for each of those years. Show theincome and population trends fromthe resident, nonresident, and combined streams. Make some statement about Indiana DNR's income from hunters - are higher fees bringing in more (real) income? (Bonus points: Is there an "elasticity of demand" for Indiana licenses? Are nonresidents paying an increasingly higher percentage of the bills? Howcan DNR maximize its income?) ============================== A more comprehensive, collegiate approach: Determine if higher licensing fees could be impactingthe number of residents who would otherwise hunt. (Impact: fewer hunters means less economic benefit to local economies/ or fewer hunters means it's more difficult for DNR to manage wildlife populations (e.g. deer). Basic approach: show that over time, States with greater % increases in resident license fees had relativelyfewer residents joining the ranks of hunters. (Oneproblem is that there are many reasons why someone would not take up hunting - lack of a mentor, urbanization, lack of places to hunt, etc. You are trying to show that higher licensing costsmay also be a factor). Suggest you get license fee data over~ 20-yr stretch for as many states as you have time. (Again sample every 5 yrs to make the task manageable; and don't forget to correct for inflation). Get the number of resident licenses sold for that period. Get the demographicdata for those statesand calculate the %ofresidents that purchased licenses during those years. Show whether or not there is a correlation of higher license costs with a declining percentage of residents purchasing licenses. You'll need to use the percent of residents purchasing licenses, because population growth should be different for the States, and could skew anydifferences. (For bonuspoints:establish a nullhypothesis that increasing fees do not affect participation and disprove it; use "percent of disposable income" for the license fee cost (e.g. one way to representthe costof buying something isto determine how longyou had to work in order to purchaseit. If your income has doubled over time, and the license fees have also doubled (all else being equal), then the "labor expended"to purchase a license has not increased)). ------------------------------------------------------------------ -you can pm me if you have any questions . -fsh |
RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
Great post, fsh! You've basically done all the work for him! ;)
Fill in the gaps, and you've got an "A" for sure! :) |
RE: College Paper- NEED INPUT!
And...if you look or contact the state, I bet they've really done all the work for you to include numbers and projections.
