ground hunting??
im definently trying to buy a bow this spring for next year....it home i have alot of little farms and small woodlots to hunt that i could chain my stands to and not have a worry about getting them stolen or anything....and it isnt all that far so i could leave my steps in the tree and attach a hang on when i get in if i felt i needed to.....i have 2 cheap hang-ons and 2 cheap 15 foot ladder stands...never hunted from them..but i have them and plan to use them to get by this first season till i can buy a climber.....or who knows maybe ill have the cash this summer for a climber but i doubt it..probably my xmas present next year.....them stands should work fine at home on when im home(im at college right now....) but i have some excellent ground up here about 20 mins north of here i hunt...and would love to bow hunt it...one day me and dad had 4 shooters within bow range all before noon while we were fall turkey hunting..any would made a fine first bow buck...we sat there with shotguns wishing they were bows!! one wall hanger..25yds away..i wanted him! lol.....the area isnt WIDE open hard woods....some of my favorite spots are actually in growing thickets that have trails through them ect....i was wondering how hard it would be to bowhunt deer from the ground...i know they can see and hear you draw...and your scent isnt in the air like a stand would be...but ive seen numerous bucks in bow season while small game and turkey hunting(also bow season here) always in bow range...my spots are all too far to pack in a stand...id hate to carry a climber that far actually..and its all public state game lands that other hunters frequent..so leaving a stand is pretty much not an option...so how hard would bowhunting from the ground be if i watch my scent and draw when they are behind a tree or whatevers there?? im so excited about this bowhunting stuff....i cant wait....thanx guys..just wondering if its IMPOSSIBLE......

RE: ground hunting??
it isnt hard at all you just have to let the deer get used to the blind and conceal it well but i have had deer within 10 ft of the blind so you should be fine hunting from the ground

RE: ground hunting??
I hunt all year from a groung blind and they work well. I don't have any problems with deer not getting used to the blind. We set up just when we use it and have deer come in and not pay much notice to the blind. If you are in heavy cover you need to conceal it more. You don't want to have it sky lined so set up under a tree to break that up. I have set mine in the open and have had deer come within 20 yards with no concealment at all. The biggest thing is conceal your scent, movement, and sound and play the wind. I never have left mine set up for them to get used to it.

RE: ground hunting??
i' hunt on the ground all the time.. never used a ground blind in my hunting life.. i've hunted from stands and have had opportunities to shoot deerbut every deer i've shot i've been on the ground...i just pick a log and sit down...i dont use any scent killer(i have deer come closer when i dont wear it), when they come in i wait for them to enter shooting distance and then
1.) when their walking or what not and their head is behind a tree i stand up. 2.) then i wait till their head is behind another tree(or theirwhen their not paying attention)and i draw back. 3.) then i let my pin settle on the kill zone and "wack" i dunno its always worked for me... good luck -Aaron |
RE: ground hunting??
thanx guys.....i wont be using a ground blind...just nature..i havent bought a bow yet but i figured todays short AtA legnths allow shooting sitting down pretty easy...maybe a small seat or something to get me up a little bit...or just go up on one knee to shot....ill see how it goes...i think i can pull it off if i watch my draw.....and now that i have a bow instead of a gun ill never see a deer! lol
