I've always used a Treestand- Why blind hunt?
 

I've been seeing many posts lately regarding hunting from blinds and it is something I've never tried...or even thought about doing. What are some of the benefits to hunting a blind as opposed to a tree-stand? Do you need to be more scent conscious? I am going to assume that there is more freedom of movement in a blind than a tree-stand. Are they mostly natural blinds or huts/ camo tarps etc ...Man I didn't realize how many question I have -- Can someone just throw a bunch of info my way? Thanks.

I was about to post a very similiar question. I am new to bowhunting and have 2 young sons that I'm trying to teach as I learn. I have been reading everything I can find regarding equipment, camo, scent control, etc, but am still looking for info regarding ground hunting. Bringing one or both of my sons with me into the woods would make it difficult to use a stand. Needless to say I plan on hunting almost exclusively on the ground this year. Any info regarding what type of blind (natural, tent, umbrella like, or some combination of the 2), places to set up, etc. Being a greenhorn I don't have any info to off you NJ-Bowhunter, sorry.

go to Double archery's site and look at the blinds..i have the T2..it's awesome. the reason for it is..new places u may hunt on the spur of the moment...no trees to hand...time...they pop up in 5sec..and take down as fast...u can sit in there..take a nap,,,,move...eat...drink...and the front has a shoot through net..camo pattern...inside is black:). get the latest video there...awesome hunts

Do you need to be more scent conscious? Yes, there is less grace with scent on the ground.I am going to assume that there is more freedom of movement in a blind than a tree-stand. Yes and no. Yes you can move more freely. No in that movement is more likely to be spotted. Are they mostly natural blinds or huts/ camo tarps etc They are all kinds. I have hunted with my ghillie/sniper suit in the open with background and snuggled in deadfall. Have carried old replacement shockcord tentposts and used these for a quick blind that covers movement. The primary thing I like about it is; you take advantage of the terrain; and have more ability to move to take advantage of situations. No tree stands to pack in or move. Allows you to get down and dirty and Feel the adrenaline RUSH!!

I tried it this year for first time and it was a blast having deer in front of blind only ten ft. away. I was surprised at how well they work.

I have never used a blind but I have taken most of my deer from the ground. I have started using a treestand and I feel it gives you an advantage because your scent is above the deer. I think you have pretty good freedom of movement in a treestand as long as you are quiet and slow, that is if your high enough in the tree. I would say at least 15ft, I don't see the need to go 30ft in the air. Personally I think its more fun to take a deer while hunting on the ground. Just something about being that close makes it really exciting.

The site is Double Bull Archery.com. You might want to look at their T-5 as it is a good size box shape blind that is quick and easy and you can get your kids in with you and still get animals. We videod bull elk at 19 yards and turkeys closer. Last week I hunted with a freind with the double bull and another with a Carbon Cabin from Cabelas. The DB is way better and worth the extra $. The Carbon Cabin is one of those hoop frames using spring steel that folds into a small circle. Problem is once you pop it open it takes a magician to get it to fold back right. Also it has a couple of big windows that show movement and it has velcro for the windows so the noise to open or close one is terrible. Good luck with the kids and hunts.

I tried ground hunting this weekend, worked really well. Saw quite a few deer and is much easer to get in and out without having to set up a tree stand. I dont think I will give up my stand but i will continue to hunt from a blind. Really opens up some oppertunities in TX where finding a tree to climb with a stand can be harder than finding deer.
