BIG BUCKS = BIG SISSYS?
Anybody else ever heard anything about this? My buddy was tellin my about it this mornin. He said that some big bucks are afraid to fight and wont respond to a grunt or rattlin. He told me this after he had a BIG 10 pointer on a hillside about 70yds. in front of him and he bleated to him and when the buck started to walk away he grunted and bleated like a buck with a doe. He said the buck had his nose down and looked like he was cruisin but just wouldnt respond and that he read an article or heard that some big bucks just act like little bucks. This same buck that wouldnt respond also has a few scrapes only 4-5in diameter, which I thought was a bit small for a 140-150 class buck. Any input would be appreciated.

I've never heard this, but very interesting.

That buck was either a little spooked by too much calling, or had better things to tend to.

If he had his nose down he could have been trailing a doe.
FOOLPROOF? Never underestimate the power of a fool! What if the "Hokey Pokey" really is what it's all about? |

With the nose to the ground and the "keep on truckin'" attitude, I agree with Thundermug...hot on a doe.
As far as the scrapes, I've seen it go both ways. Small bucks USING big scapes and big bucks USING sall scrapes. I have never seen one being made (except on TV!) But I am convinced that scrapes are not used by a single buck. I saw four deer last year all stop to urinate and branch lick one scrape. Three bucks and one doe(even I could sell her estrous). So the point of a small scrape may be moot. I'm not sure where your at, but here in SE Michigan, They're starting to turn on this way. Maybe try a doe in heat scent. |

guess he was telling your friend that a sure thang was heading his way. Remember, they don't always follow the rules!

Saw a 2x2 make a scrape across a corn field last night. A 3x3 came out minutes later and used the first bucks scrape after it was just made and then the 2 ended up fighting. First time I'd seen one made too.

Could be that he didn't "Buy" your buddies grunt.
They don't get that big without learning a few things. "It's not the kill, it's the adventure and challenge! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>" |

I agree with thundermug, if that buck was already trailing a doe, the only thing that may turn him is a closer doe. Why fight when you are on the trail of a girlfriend already.

RE: BIG BUCKS = BIG SISSYS?
Bucks have differing personalities just like most animals. You'll see little bucks come flying in to rattling and huge bucks shy away. And scrapes are most often times community scrapes used by several different bucks and the size of the scrape has nothing to do with the size or personality traits of a buck.

wolfen,
I bet you thought he was calling you a sissy didn't you<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>. Big bucks have better things to do with their time. Most big bucks are old enough to have learned to ignore the "little punks" causing the disturbance and concentrate on the ladies. Then, they kick @$$ when they run up in the middle of their business. Pretty much the same as humans. The older more mature males avoid confrontation and then when the young punks push it to far, they put them in their place. Remember, bucks grunting and fighting is an every day occurence to them during this time of year. It is no big deal. We expect them to come running but the fact is that most places they ignore rattling and grunting for all but just a few days of the year. Just like you learn to ignore your wife when your watching the Outdoor Channel<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Protect your hunting rights, "Spay or neuter a liberal." |
