leaving for a week long bowhunt in West VA.
well I am heading out in the morning for a week long hunt in West virginia. I hurt my back yesterday, couldn't move for almost an hour! It's getting better, doc said it was just a badly pulled muscle. I don't know if I will be able to climb any trees, but I am going to give it a try and see what happens. My luck this year hasn't been so great, but Maybe it will change? Anyway I will be back next sunday sometime, hopefully with a couple deer, and some good stories.

RE: leaving for a week long bowhunt in West VA.
Just got back from 5 days in W Va - huntin the Geo Washington Nat'l Forest. Been huntin there 26 years. This is the worst year for mast I've experienced. We did some hard scouting and found zero oak nuts in the woods. I saw one deer from stand, my partner saw two. Saw hundreds of deer down in the valley in the pastures on private property - feeding on pasture grass all thru the daylight hours, too. Problem is - couln't hunt them on the private ground. The locals claim it's as bad as they've ever seen it. Spoke to a mail carrier who owns a farm with her husband in the valley. She said they have one of the few corn fields in the area and the deer came down from the mountain in droves and decimated their field. She claimed they got a permit and killed 51 deer in 3 weeks out of the field. If there's any ort of tuff weather this winter - there's sure to be a significant die-off. The lack of acorns is from a heavy late frost and severe drought in Pendleton County this year. I hope the area you'll be hunting is in better shape. Hunt the grassy areas - recent rainfall has finally turned it green, and that's about all the deer and turkeys can find to munch on right now in a lot of areas down there.

I'm leaving Nov 10th for two weeks of bow season in Barbour county. My cousin has been seeing them as heavy as ever. All my uncles have said they've had no problems finding deer. We hunt on state land for the most part.

Good luck 5 shot, I find it odd that the mast is so thin up that way, man we have a heavy mast crop in central Va. Hope your back holds out.

Agree with above, find the acorns & you'll find the deer. Nuts are a hit & miss from what i've seen.

Good luck 5 shot. I'm sure you're luck will turn around. I don't know where you are going in WV, but from what I've seen and the folks I've talked to around our area...the acorns are plentiful. Last sat when I was out, they were steady falling. We haven't had a good year like this in our area in a while.

Good Luck 5'er I've spent about 20 on stand and so far have only seen 1 spike that made a fatal decision on Monday. Oak is hit and miss so if you have any grass land that is the best place to be.

Here in berkeley County, the mast is great, and the deer are plentiful. Deer are rubbing and scraping and responding to calling.

thanks all. I will be hunting near Elkins. Mostly oak ridges, some grass around the logging roads. I guess I will find out what it looks like soon enough. Didn't make it up there last year so, I hope everything is as I left it. You never know with national forest land.
