let a forkhorn pass today, proud of myself

today is day 3 ny southern zone, opening day saw 2 does and a spikey but had no shot at the does and today at 5pm a nice forkhorn like a nice 4 point came up , i used the climber in an area i never hunt cause i seen 2 twin 8's there, he came up 5 yards away and was eating i debated taking him but my first was a small 5 and told myself if it aint a 6 let it grow up,,,, the little bugger got me pumping though,,,,, he then moved to 15 yards so i pulled and put the pin on him and said to myself, see ya next year!! i had to see if i could have gotten him w/out spooking him and i did! actually 2 rookie friends never got a deer w/ the bow yet so i figure they can take it and be proud of it!! i quess the scouting, scent control and studying is working,,,,,

Nice job there Monster. It's all the excitement without the bloddy mess! LOL. That type of discipline is to be commended. It'll pay off when you see him next year...bigger. Congrats.

I believe our native american brothers called that "counting coup". Its equally gratifying and a lot less work, huh?

Good Job! Except for one thing. I wouldn't have drawn on him. Too risky , getting busted by that big buck that you didn't see

As they always say, you gotta let the little ones grow up if you want bigger ones. I'd rather shoot a doe than a small buck any day. You're ensuring one of your future bucks by letting that little fella live. Congrats.

Congrats, its alot easier to say you are going to pass one than to actually do it. Good job.

it's mighty hard to let them pass, but it pays off. I have decided that I want a wall hanger this year, so far I have let four bucks walk, evything from a three point to eight point. I know what you went thru.

I commend you on your dicipline - I honestly don't think I could have let the 8pt walk

I also leet a 4 point walk the other night, not easy to do, but it helps that I had seen a bigger buck out of the same stand a few weeks ago. He may not get the free pass during the late season.

Good job, it sure ain't easy to let those 1st few small ones walk. It does get easier though.

Great job!!! Let 'em go and let 'em grow. I have had 5 different bucks within 15 yards of me so far this year and let them all go. None really even made me think twice...as wimp said, it gets easier the longer you bowhunt and the more bucks you get under your belt. Good for you! Keep it up and pass the word on.

Monst,

Glad you let him walk, ethics and self control are a major part of our sport and hunting in general. I have gotten to the point in my life that I let most of the ones I see go by, even what some would consider wall hangers. It's as important for me to see how close I can get to them and draw on them, with out getting busted, as it is to actually take one. These, I call my catch and release. I am confident enough in my shooting abilities that if I took the shot it would be table fare. I have a Catch & Release Section of my hunting log. It's almost to much fun.:D :D :D

There is more to bowhunting than whackin' the first one you see. My first encounter was a 4 point on opening day ... a 5 yard shot. I gave the young guy a pass because I needed to harvest a doe first. It was one of those times I had the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other.

You did the right thing when no one was watching. That's called integrity in my book. These days a man with integrity stands out in a crowd.

Congrats...
I'm with Wolfen and Wimp. Let em grow. It will get easier to do for sure, with each one you pass. I found for me it also helped me to focus....so when the time comes to actually take one, everything works.
Passed 3 bucks so far this year...small bucks. One season a few years back, I saw 17 different bucks during bow season that I could have taken...ended up with 3 does. Hopefully some of those are still alive and whoppers by now. I have faith that it will eventually pay off, even in the areas that I hunt...which aren't known for big bucks.
Be proud of yourself, and your decision...many folks don't have the desire or the discipline to do it.

I have to say my hat is off to you. Many do not think about the future bucks when they have one in front of them. We have that problem in my area of New York that I hunt.

Good Job!
The more you let go the easier it is. I've passed 5 bucks in the past 2 nights (gotta be a trophy, lets me go out more and enjoy the hunt). It gives you a good feeling to let them go and just watch

Our season is a month old tomorrow here in IA. I've let 7 bucks walk so far because I know there is a beheameth living in that area. Everything from spike to a couple 10's. After seeing that monster I'm having a hard time deciding TOO shoot another deer. Opososite problem but same result.

THWACK!

RE: let a forkhorn pass today, proud of myself

Well my area of WI is earn a buck this year. All season I had bucks around but few does. Mostly does with fawns and I wanted a dry doe. Two weeks ago I got a nice 1-1/2 year old doe (dry) and was ready for my buck. Well I have had 7 bucks since the season started in my bow range and I have ranked them in order of what I would shoot. #1 is a 19" spread 7 pointer, #2 is a 8 pointer about 16" and #3 was a 8 pointer about 12-14" not sure. Last weekend #3 shows up, I had many shots but held out, I told myself I should shoot him but I did not. Afterwards I did not know if I should regret not shooting or not. I was kind of holding out for #1 or #2. That kind of over confidence will probably kick me in the butt but I had this voice telling me to wait. I will be out this weekend and I don't know what I will do till something happens but at least I know he is still there. That's what you have when you let one walk, the knowledge that you did not take a animal out of the herd. Perhaps I will get lucky and get a shot at one of my top two. If I see #3 again I might take him, I guess it depends on the time of day and temp plus what ever might be on my mind at the time. This is my land so I hope to influence the herd in a positive way, I don't want to shoot young deer or there won't be a top two in the future.
Regards,
Bill

I let an 8pt walk. His spread was about 1" inside his ears on each side. Sort of tall, probably average. Had him at 9 step broadside. I let him walk. Was tough, he would have been the biggest buck I had ever gotten. But my goal is a deer with a spread out past the ears. After that I will go bigger yet, but for now thats what I want. It was tough, and I think this buck may get taken anyway, but at least I am doing my part.
