how many pins?
i plan on buying a bow in the spring, and am looking at accessories for it...i was wondering how many pins you guys use on your sights? it will be my first time shooting a bow seriously in my life so i doubt my range will be too far even though i will be shooting every day from may-the end of september.....i just dont know how many pins to look for? i was thinking 5 so i can dial them all in and know at 25 my arrow will hit the 25yd pin ect...no guessing....just remembering during the moment of truth...but i guess if i had 3 i could go 10,20,30...and if somethings at 15 put it in between the 10 and 20yd pins....i dont know...what do you guys say on the subject?? whats the better choice? thanx guys....hope you guys dont get sick of me and my questions

RE: how many pins?
3-pins @20-30-40, then shoot the gaps for odd ranges.

RE: how many pins?
I am not saying that the way I do it is best, but it is the way I do it. I use only one pin. It seems to eliminate confusion for me during the shot. I have to only look at one pin, I put it right where I want it from 0-20yds then start to raise it a bit if I am shooting farther out, although I rarely shoot any farther out, I like to hang stands so the shot is about 15-20yds. Again, not saying this is the best way just the way that I like! :)

RE: how many pins?
I use 3 pins...20, 30, 40. Although I only practice with the 40 yard pin, it makes the closer shot seem a bit easier!

RE: how many pins?
15
25 35 |
RE: how many pins?
I have 5 vertical pins. 10-20-30-40-50. It is not at all confusing or hard to see the animal. It gives you a lot of confidence knowing that the pin is right for the job.

RE: how many pins?
None. I hate having sights on a hunting bow. They just get in the way.

RE: how many pins?
The fewer the better when you are starting out. Most of today's bows are fast enough that there isn't much difference from 20-30 yds, which is as far as I'd recommend any new bowhunter shoot regardless of ability. In that case you can try 1 pin and adjust to see how you like it, if that doesn't suit you, add a 30. Try to practice out to 40 though, to make the close ones a chip shot. 20-30-40 is a good setup, but I'd forget the 40 at live targets.

RE: how many pins?
I use to have 4 pins on my bow 10 20 30 40. As I hunted more and more I never used 40 very often so when I bought new fiberoptic sights i just use 3 10 20 30

RE: how many pins?
5 pins, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60
I don't understand a 10 yard pin, my 20 yard pin is an inch high at 10 yards... |
RE: how many pins?
I have a setup of 4...20-25-30-35. Just do what feels comfortable.

RE: how many pins?
I've got mine set at 20, 30 & 40.
Like Rob, I can't tell enough of a difference in point of impact from 10 yards to 20. I also don't like shooting at live game past 40. To be honest, I'm not too crazy at it at too much past 30. There's simply too many things beyond my control that can happen; the animal only has to take a step or two at 40 yards at the exact instant you touch your release, and you've gone from a perfect double-lunger down inside of 80 yards to a six-hour to overnight wait for a gutshot animal. I'll also throw this out there, as someone before told me this was a helpful tidbit: My 20-yard pin is green (for "You've got the green light; let 'er rip!); my 30-yard pin is yellow (for "let's take our time on this one and focus); and my 40-yarder is red (let's think about this one; are we sure there's not gonna be a better shot?). This is also the reverse order that the lights begin diminishing in brightness; I lose visibility of my red pin first, then my yellow, and -- last of all -- my green pin. When it's getting that dark, I don't need to be shooting at anything past 20 anyway until I finally lose enough light that it's time to pack it in. |
RE: how many pins?
20, 30, and 40
|
RE: how many pins?
1 pin. Single pin mover, set at 25 yards. 1 inch high at 15 and 1 inch low at 30. I don't shoot over 30 anyway.

RE: how many pins?
One pin for me set at 25 yards. It's so simple I'll never switch back to multiple pins.

RE: how many pins?
thank you all so much....i guess its one of them things that ill have to learn about as i go....i didnt realize that the pins would be so close on target...i guess i am used to the old slow bows...i know looking at pins on the older bows ive seen they seem to be inches apart and theres only 2 or 3 painted brass pins! lol....but i guess todays bows are shooting alot faster then a bow from 10-20yrs ago with better, lighter arrows ect ect....i guess ill make the choice when the time comes...start off with a 3 pin..upgrade to 4 or 5 if i want...or drop down to 1 if i like.....

20, 30, 40, 50
I too find it odd that someone would have a 10 yard pin. I mean, point blank is point blank. With todays bows a pin set at 20 yards should cover just about anything under 25. |

For that snake head at 3 yards, your 40 pin will be closest |
RE: how many pins?
If it's a hunting rig then I'd opt for only two pins. One at 20 and the second at 30 yards. There really is no reason to have a pin at 10 yards. There is only about an inch difference between 10 and 20 yards. Having more pins just obscures the target and gives you more of a chance to pick the wrong pin in a hunting situation. I've even seen guys pick the wrong pin shooting targets. It happens, but it's never happened to me--------yeh right!!
If you want to practice at longer distances then a third pin will be needed and set for 40 yards. Then when you go hunting just take the third pin off or slide it down out of the way. Depending on the speed of the bow, I like a single pin for hunting sighted in for 25 yards. That allows me to shoot out to 30 yards with about a 3" drop which still keeps the arrow in the vitals with no hold over or trying to pick the right pin. With only one pin I always pick the right one. |
RE: how many pins?
I shoot 4 pins, 20,30,40,50 My bow shoots flat out to 20 so i just use the 20 pin on anything closer then that.

RE: how many pins?
one pin set at twenty yards works for me
