How can you sit all day?

Some people say that they get out at their stands at dark and dont get out of their stands until dark. What do you do all day? You cant just watch the woods for that long...no way..

Like NIKE says "Just Do It!" Last year paid off when I did that. I only sit all day durring the rut. Thats when "anytime is a good time to be in the woods."

Lots of things like read, watch tv, take a shower, spend some time in the old hot tub, take a nap, If the wife goes..... I listen to her, lol.
I have several ground blinds/tree stands set up. I some times still hunt while changing a blind. I do not change very often and I do read and yes sometimes I cat nap but not in a tree stand. If I feel like im getting sleepy I get down.

When I am hunting at home in PA, unless the rut is close and I am on a big buck it is hard for me to sit on stand all day.
But when I go out to Illinois to bowhunt the rut, I have no problem sitting from dark till dark! Just thinking about what could walk by at any time keeps me there without blinking an eye.

I n my opinion alot depends on the day. If there are alot of sightings then i do not move, but if its slow then i will go in for a while.

I usually can't hunt all day in one stand. If I do, I have to get down for about an hour. Usually though, I have morning spots that I like and evening spots. My morning spots are usually based on ease of entry and are usually down looging trails not too close to fields. My evening hunts are ussually a little harder to get into and are closer to a field (around 30-100 yards).

I spend the entire year looking forward to deer season. There are few places I would rather be. Sure sometimes I doze off, eat a snack, hay in my opinion there is nothing wrong with watching "...the woods for that long" - In fact I enjoy it.

It is not easy sitting all day. For me I found that doing isametrics
with my legs and calfs and feet help keep the muscles from cramping and also keeps me warm, also my butt cheaks will cramp so I just try to change my weight on each cheeck when they cramp. You may try to stand up slowly, for awhile that also helps. But dont give up the fate.

The first few hours I'm ok but after a while I bust out a gameboy and play Madden 2003. I look around after every play. Works great and keeps me in the stand all day.

I do not hunt all day all the time, but when I do I often think to myself, "Man this is going to be boring and will seem like an eternity" The funny thing is, the time seems to fly, between birds, racoons, possums, and hopefully the occasional deer I always seem to be entertained, especially when the squirrels start doing their thing, there is nothing that will make you feel dumber than hearing leaves rustling and twigs snapping for an hour and after verifing every time that it is squirrel making the noise you ignore it for 10 minutes and then turn to see a deer leaving the area that you heard the noise from, as a result I do not care if there are 1,000 squirrels making noise I stay busy checking out every sound.

I just think of how much I miss bow season during February and March, and how long it seems to take to get to October again the following year. It's easy to savor every minute when I am in my stand, the time goes so fast. There is no way I could read or play a game, what if I miss something!?

I sit in my stand watching all the activity around me. For the past 4 seasons I have participated in Indiana DNR's Bowhunter Survey. They send you a chart of different game and furbearers that you mark numbers, hours hunted and notes. I have had some of the best times in my stands doing this. Last year; heard something running on the opposite side of a feeder creek only to look up and see a bobcat hauling butt towards the river with a mudd yellow coyote in hot pursuit. I thought cats didn't like water but that one made it across (80 ft) long before the coyote.

But then I guess I'm just easily amused!

My dad stayed in his stand from daylight till dark when i was starting to hunt, now my dad never archery hunted he just rifle hunted so i knew that if i wanted to hunt that i would have to stay on stand all day , yea it sucked when i was 12,,13, 14, 15, 16, but when i was 17 you couldnt drag me out of my stand until dark and from age 17 on there wasnt to many years i didnt get a buck in rifle season, then i started archery hunting when i was 19 and for some reason i just hunt in the morning on stand and make a few drives with my friends from about 10:30 till 2:00 then head for the afternoon stand.

The bad thing usually in rifle season it was freezing out, but i stuck it out and i found out that if you take your eyes off the woods for a while thats when you usually get burnt by the bucks or does. so i just watch the woods....

Hunting with a bow brings about a different challenge on every hunt!!!

Tazman,
I know what you mean about those stupid squirrels. Every evening I swear I'm going to kill every squirrel in the woods they make so damn much noise. But every time I hear a leaf rustle I HAVE to look, like some stupid dog that falls for the fake throw every time. I just can't help it, I know I'd be kicking myself if it was a deer and I wasn't ready for him because I thought he was a squirrel.

1. Read a book
2. Balance your checkbook
3. Listen to the game on your Walkman
4. Crotche (sp?) (what my wife does)
5. Study for class (College/HS students)
6. Read all those hunting mags your behind
7. Take along the latest version of Cabelas to make your X-mas list (what better environment to know what you're missing?)

Only during the rut will I do it all day and the rut peaks out here in NW Montana the last week in November, at that time winter has no mercy, but I have to be there then, you just gotta be in the woods at this time, good luck, Bobby

I usually bring a book and plenty of food. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, makes for a tough sit like bieng hungry or thirsty. Bring water, real food (jerky or a health bar), and a few snacks.

Hunting is MY time. I'm not on the clock. So if I get tired, I take a nap in the stand. If I miss something, I won't know it cause I'm asleep anyhow...so did I really miss anything??????

I usually carry a few arrows with Judo tips for them squirrely critters. I also carry a predator call (cottontail distress) and I hit it once in a while...you never know what may show up.

RE: How can you sit all day?

Every year I vow to sit all day, and every year I fail to do it. This year, for this very reason, I bought an Ol' Man climber so the comfort factor would be eliminated. I can actually fall asleep in this without fear of falling. I bring a small book (the Bible) to read and plan on having some scent free food/water with me, 'cause I'm gonna do it this year!

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.

RE: How can you sit all day?

The key is COMFORT. I bought a tree lounge
tree stand last year and have had no problem
hunting all day. I bring my video camera with
me also to catch the other wildlife during
the day.
Last December i was trying to hunt a big 10 pt.
but couldnt get up with him during daylight hours.
I set out a trail timer at his scrapes and it showed
he got there well after dark and off and on throughout
the night and morning. There were quite a few
mornings where he seemed to be lingering around
until about the time i went to my morning stand.
I was obviously spooking him. What I did next
may sound extreme but hes on my wall now.
I got in my tree lounge at 4:30 pm and stayed in it
until the following morning when the big guy showed
back up right at legal shooting time. I heard him
several times that night and early morning coming and
then leaving for and hour or so.
I even slept up there, (strapped in securily though).
I usually stay in my stand all day when hunting
in a bedding area and or during the rut.
Hunt all day or go home and do chores for the
wife? Think i'll hunt.

RE: How can you sit all day?

This is really a great question. Although I'm usually bored stiff, I can last the whole day in the woods. On the other hand, my 12 year old can't. I like the idea DeerT had about the Gameboy. I'll make sure this year my son takes his along. Maybe that will keep him in the woods a little while longer. Great Post.
