What's your longest shot on a deer?

Normally I don't like to take a shot beyond 30 yards, but I killed one this season at 42 yards. I felt confident in the shot so I took it. He ran only 60 yards.

If you've practiced, and are confident, go for it. Me, 30 yards is it.

30. Conditions would have to be perfect for me to be comfortable going beyond that. I do read where some folks say they can shoot tight groups up to 60 yards with these new super-bows, but I don't know if they retain enough energy at that distance to put a deer down.

Run the specs through a software program or shoot through a chrono at 60 yards. My bow is still producing over 60 ft pounds of kinetic energy at 60 yards and my bow isn't even considered to be one of the faster bows on the market.60 ft pds of KE ismore than some have "out of the gate".

I have beenpracticing at 60 and 70 yards...I can't tell you how flat my arrow flight still is at 60 yards. The group sizes are well within deer vital size. I think distance has allot to do with equipment, enviornmental conditions (wind for that day)and the amount you practice in the off season.

Sorry I won't answer the original question right here for all to see. This web sight wouldn't have enough pages to debate it all over again.:D[:-]:D

i took a shot on a doe this year at 60 yards. i hither in the back right quarter.i will never do it again. i tracked it for 3 miles. i went out tohunt a couple days after christmas and that same exact doe prestented me with the same shot. i did not take it but, it breaks my heart to see that deer alive and to know it will have to suffer althrough the summer. do u think i should have taken the shot.

42 yard double lunger......under 30 is the norm for me.

For me the farthest shot I have taken was 40 yards, but I missed. I killed a deer at 27 yards this year and that was the next farthest shot.

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

I like to keep 'em under 30yds...My longest shot however was on a doe at 38yds. Took her cleanly w/ a double lung hit. The condition was just right and there wereturkeys scratching nearby making noise to hide the sound somewhat and she was relaxed feeding.

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

i am an avid 3D and Dot shooter i regularly take shots of 80 yards or more on target and do very well at it. but on a deer i tend to try and stay under 50 because there are a lot of variables we cant controle in the woods. a slight breez not hardly noticable at the bow could become several inches of arrow drift at 70 or 80 yards and other variables. inevitably it comes down to you. what can you do and be realistic. i know guys who drill the x at 50 or more yards in tourneys but cant kill a deer beyond 30. nervs play a big part in shooting at game. they know this and keep thier shots respectful of thier abilities and so should you .

I love your comment above. The words "tend" and "try" seem to stick out to me. Now common...with your skills and equipment you know if you were alone, had no wind, had a nice buck at 60 yards and you pulled back and found that your 60 yard pin was holding nice and steady, you would let that sucker fly. ;)HA! :DJust giving you a hard time. I just had to comment on your choice of words.

Others have brought up some good points about nerves being a factor for accuracy. If I had a 10 point deer breathing down my neck at 10 yards, I think I would have a problem keeping steady also. Some of you guys shooting really short range might as well hunt with a knife.:D

In theopen terrain I hunt in, I would be extremly lucky to get a 20 yard shot.

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

I would say 40 yards, and be fairly confident that I would stick to that. I had a 12 pointer within 55 yards this year.

Now - I couldn't resist the urge to draw (the devil made me do it), but I didn't have the confidence to release. The thought of wounding and losing what might be the biggest deer where I hunt kept me from it. He really tried my patience. He stood there for almost 3 minutes (felt like three days). It was absolutely the biggest deer I have ever seen on the hoof while hunting.

Now I know that it made it through this year, I'm going to be that much more exited when I go back next year.

He will be mine....oh yes...he will be mine! ;o)

I too shoot dots, indoors and outdoors, and practice out to 80 yds with field points. My hunting bows have 4 pin sights on them and are good for out to 50 yds. If the conditions were right I'd shoot 50 yds., but I've never had the chance. My longest shot was 40 yds. and it worked perfect for me. My favorite distance for a shot is 12 to 15 yds. broadside with their nose in one of my scent bombs! A person should only shoot at yardages that they are competent at. If you are not reasonably sure that you can make a killing shot, don't shoot!

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

I with you on the far shots when it comes to bow hunting, its just too risky for me. Though I have good confidence in my bow, I dont have enough confidence in myself to take a shot much further than 30 yards. Only because I dont trust my judgement to take far shots

my top pin is set for 35 yards, i still have 2 1/2 inch groups with a 100g broadhead

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

25 yards was the longest shot I have made on a deer. Back in the day, I could pick a letter in the word coca cola on a 16oz bottle and hit it consistantly at 50 yards. Now I can't even see the damn bottle at 50 yards anymore.
The distance you need to practice is directly related to the terrain and the species you hunt. For me hunting Whitetails, that distance is almost always inside 20 yards because of how I setup and where they move within the setup. I hope to go Elk hunting in NM next fall and will work to perfect my shot out to 50 yards. Already mentioned above, it's what you are comfortable with.

BTW - the closest was 4 yards on a 10 point P&Y Kansas buck. Why don't they run towards the truck after you shoot them? Huh!

my longest shot was this year was on a doe at 46 yards. she ran a little over a hundred. I usally dont take them that long but she presented the broadside shot so I took it.

I killed an 11pt 150" at 52 yards and cut the aorta off at the heart and this year shot 10 pt 144" at 50 and double lunged him.........This is the result of countless hours of practice This is the farthest I will try....unless I head out west and then I would hone my skills some more

Wow! What is your bottom pin set for? 225? You must hunt in some steep mountains or wide open plains or something.;)The 2 1/2 inch groups, are they at 35 yards? What is the yardage of your longest shot at a deer?

I have only shot one deer out of the 27 i have shot in my life futher then 20 yards and it was right around 47 yards on christmas morning two years ago i pratice about 100 days a year from my tree stand in the back yard at a river bottom buck i have set up the only reason i took the 47 yard shot was there was no wind and a clear strait shot from a ground blind i would normally not take a shot from futher then 35 yards in the woods tho

41 on a 6pt watching a doe. Punched a hole right through his heart he ran about 60yd and was out for the count. I normally don't shoot past 30 but he had his full attention on the doe and i was sure he was going 2 stay put there was no wind and i practice regulary out to 45. If that opportunity presented itself again i would take it.

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

I shoot in competitions all over, and ive made shots in doors as far as 75yds, the furthest that ive killed a deer was 67yds double lunged a doe and i shot my buck last year a 155 10 pointer at 52yds and he only ran 40yds, I take my shots off of how the deer is acting if he is calm and has no idea im there and hes 50 yds then im gonna whack him, but if hes cautious then ill wait, im all about an ethic kill.

longbeardbuster 01-14-2006 01:47 AM

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

I have taken 1 doe at 32 steps and that is the longest so far. Most
of my shots have been 20 to 25 steps and a few less than 20 but
if I had a clear shot at 40, I would not hesitate. I practice out to
50 all the time but would not feel comfortable taking a shot that far
at a real deer.

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

37 yards on a Mule Deer. He was quartered away, hit behind the last rib and came out the opposite shoulder, he went about 15 yards. I practice out to 50 but like to keep the shots 30 and under if possible.

PA Bow/Flinter 01-14-2006 07:48 AM

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

I like to keep them under 30....25 is nice.....heck....I really want like 20. I think my sig explains my point rather well.

That being said.....I was ofered the perfect shot this year at 35 yds and I took it. The BB went 12 yds and collapsed. I guess I need to hone my hunting skills a little more.

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

38 yards max the first day out hunting with myOutback a couple season's ago. It was a perfect shot..dropped her in her tracks.

Just about every other bow kill has been 28 yards or less...just because my favorite stand is setup on 2 trails crossing. Most deer are under 15 yards away from me.

Windwalker7 01-14-2006 10:12 AM

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

A couple at 40, a couple at 45, 2 at 50. I know I'll hear some flack over this. I usually practice at 40and 50. I don't normally take those shots but if the deer is relaxed, in the open and I've been watching it for a while, I'll take the shot.

One timeI shot a doe walking at about 22 yds under my tree stand. I shot it a little too far back. It ran a little bit and layed down. I couldn't see it for a while, then it got up and started walking. It was 50 yds. I took another shot, smacked it through the lungsand it went down.

I also hit a doe another time and decided to track it a little earlier than I should of. It went into a small ravine. I stood there looking around and spottedher on the other side, laying there watching me. I knelt down and watched it through binoculars. I ranged it at 50yds. Didn't know if I should shoot again or not. After a little while I took the shot and nailed her.

If I count those 2 then I'd of taken 4 at 50yds.

so far the furthest that i have shot and killed a deer at was 15yrd, i did shot at a doe this year at 32yrds but i missed out of stupidity that i would rather not explain.:)

Used to only shoot out to 30yrds. Bought a range finder this year and it proved to be of value to me on a 35 yrd lung and liver shot on this deer.

40 yards but everything was perfect for that particular shot. Every other has been 25 yards or less with most of those being between 2 and 15 yards.

I'm a pretty good archer but I feel its more important to be a good hunter. Good hunters get close.

52 yards, wide open and i shoot out to 60 all the time i knew i could pull it off. Shot the doe and she went about 30 yards and piled up.

RE: What's your longest shot on a deer?

I am confident in shooting 50 yards, now that being said i have never had to. both the deer i have taken where within 12 yards. I much prefure that but if i needed to i could do the 50.
