Boy Am I Stupid!!!

I wasn't going to tell anyone about my moronic hunt Sunday evening , but I'm just curious if anyone else has made stupid mistakes like this.

I spent about two hours making an awesome ground blind with natural cover a couple weeks ago. I made the blind in a area that had alot of deer activity , crossings in every direction. I noticed this while hunting from my treestand. I made the ground blind with three trails criss crossing within 15 yards of the blind and one rub line about 20 yards in front of the blind. Well after watching the way the deer were moving through here from my treestand , I picked out exactly where I was going to draw my bow as the deer headed down the trail (clump of trees made a perfect draw opportunity). Just exactly how I pictured it , a big doe came out a good hour before dark heading right down my trail. Well , when she got within 20 yards , she mosied around with her head to the ground eating acorns , so I waited as she was still pointed in the direction of my plans. After about 20 minutes she cut off to the left heading in the wrong direction. Heres where the stupid comes in to play. Before I left , I checked out where she was standing with her head down eating acorns. I would have had a perfect broadside (slightly quartering towards) shot a little under 20 yards What the hell was I thinking? Planning out all scenarios is one thing , but where was my compromise when I needed it?

Not stupid, just chalk it up to a learning experience. With the restricted bag limits here in Oregon I learned to take the first good shot opportunity I get. I might catch some flack for that statement, but I don't have the luxury of liberal bag limits some other hunters are blessed with. (Just one per year unless you get a special draw). Good luck next time.

I can't tell you how many times I've done the same thing. Boy, if he just takes two more steps I'll have a perfect shot. Or, if I just wait, the other, bigger deer will present itself. Hahahahahaha Don't be so down on yourself, it's all part of the hunt. This is more of a judgement call than stupidity. And I know stupid. These make good stories around the campfire. Next time remember that deer are funny people and seldom do what you want them to do. terry

Far from stupid!! Read some of my posts and probably some of my upcoming posts as the season goes on. Then you'll see what stupidity is all about. I've got the black cloud straight over my head so far.

BOWFANATIC I am sure there are plenty of folks here that have done something similar, I for one want my shot to be perfect and have missed a few waiting for the PERFECT shot rather than taking a GOOD shot that was there all along.

titleist maybe you and I could have a stupid contest! LOL

RE: Boy Am I Stupid!!!

I too have made some stupid mistakes. Like this weekend there I sat in my tree stand watching deer some 247 yards away feeding in mid day amongst some oaks. All the while I was by myself aside from the squirrels, and finches. I thought to myself "I wonder if I could sneak up on them and possibly get off a shot." So off I went 1 hour of careful stalking, glassing, and sweating! (Freaking Texas Heat!!)
I made it!! As I approach the small Oak grove I notice one of the fawns beginning to lay down. I stop and slowly squat to the ground. She is only 20 yds away. A small rise between us alows for me to scoot on my stomach to the nearest back drop. I sit up, and see the big doe feeding about 60 yds away. Then I wait, and wait, and wait. About thirty minutes later she starts to move my way. I lose her in the brush, and pick her up again right in front of me at 30 yds. Yes!! I can make this. I have shot this same shot a million times in practice. I draw, and notice that I will be shooting through the tops of the grass if I aim low behind the elbow. So I raise the pin slightly and let her rip!!! Thunk ("D@?m it"!!) I killed a mesquite directly behind her. What a wasted effort and perfect opportunity down the drain. I guess I'll go have lunch now.

Yea we all make mistakes, like last year. I got my doe, hauled her up the hill to my buddies house, got her hung from a good tree, and went to wake him up and have a cup of coffee before processing her, I did this and we went out an hour later to find that I did not get her tied up high enough, his dogs had gotten ahold of her and made a tasty breakfast meal of her. They mangled her up so bad we just let them have her. Chalk it up to experience.

The best of luck in all your hunting endeavors!!!

God Bless,
Dave

If deer always had the same plans as me, I would... well, shoot a heck of alot more deer:)
