RE: Mechanical Broadheads

For me, mechanicals work just fine as far as penetration goes. But I find that you have to buy more mechanicals than you do fixed blades. Like if you take a shot and miss and it goes into the dirt or a stick or something, then I find that the blades get bent easily or get dirt and stuff in the spot where the blades are supposed to be lodged in which makes it a lot more difficult for them to open up. I'd say go with fixed blades.

Rev, when i shot through the chrono, i could never get a consistant reading. it always ranges from 310 to 322 fps.

CamocopI shoot a pro 40 Dually IBO speed is some were in the 340 range. I expect 300 chroned. The only thing faster is the black Knight.
The fasted bow Jennings has out right now is the CK 3.5 single cam IBO is 308. I wonder if the bow shop where you went has calibrated their chrono. I know you're shooting 80# draw, but that is not going to show that much of a differnance.
Well I guess if your shooting that speed you can shoot any mech. broadhead on the maket and get pass thru after pass thru. I was zipping pass thrus with my buckmaster at 268 FPS.

I love the spitfires and will shoot nothing else give em a try youll probobaly like them. and im sure it was 46 I had a rangefinder

I quit using overdraws one windy daywhen the arrowblew off the rest at full draw, bounced over the safety lip and wedged itself between the string and my wrist. [:-]

Ahh , I can't get that picture out of my mind. Hope people take heed..
As for mechanicals. I've only shot one at a deer,Jackhammer 100gr. The deer went maybe 30 yds. Slick tricks are a fixed head and shoot the same as field tips. Again only shot once and again only a 30 yd dead end dash.:)

In 5 years, let see I have shot none with Mechanical because I dont like them, have tried them, but dont like them nor will I hunt with them. In the last5 years in Wisconsin, I have shotten 10 deer with my bow and killed, and recovered them with in 30 - 50 yards of the shot.We are only allowed to take as many deer as we have tags for in Wi. One buck during bow season and if you buy the bonus tags, you can get as many that are available in the area. I usually only buy 1 bonus tag for bow season, because im not greedy. May I also mention that 4 of the deer that I shot in the last 5 years, I have found mechanical heads in that either did not open, or had blades broken off. Im glad to see many of you support my opinion that they should be outlawed. But Im not saying that just mechanical heads can fail, but all broad heads can fail as well and will at one point or another, but we as hunters have seen it too many times where its the mechanical head that fails the most.

Wis Bow Hunter,

How many deer have you killed with Mechanical heads? None, I'm guessing. I'll put my kill percentage with Mechanical heads against yours with whatever you're useing for the past 5 years. You in?

One of the main reasons some of these guys are using mechanicals
is they are shooting so high speed set up they did not take the time to try to tune there bows to broadheads!!

Most of the people slamming mechs either have never tried them or haven't shot them in years. I tried some I didn't like but there are some good ones out there today. I've seen more deer lost with fixed blades than mechs. I'm sure its due to more guys using fixed, bows not tuned, and bad shots taken. It doesn't matter what blade you use if you take bad shots or don't have your bow tuned. I've got Muzzy's and Thunderheads but prefer Spitfires. Maybe if people would tune their bows and learn how to not take stupid shots they'd figure out mechs are just fine. Oh, wait...then they'd have to find another excuse. :D

Man that's the truth. I went with two guys opening day. I brought along a target. That evening before the hunt we all took some practice shoots. They asked me what I thought, I told them they should wait for gun season! One had a bow that was at least three inches draw length too short, and the other had never used a release, lost a few arrows drawing back, and then couldn't hit the target... By the way, they were insistant that fixed blades were the best.:D
That was my last trip with them this year.

That's profound, aeroslinger. I didn't expect such deep thinking on a mechanical broadhead thread. [8D];)I'd have added 'learn that their broadhead must be matched to the power of their equipment and to the kind of animal they're hunting.'

But, if people learned to choose the proper broadhead according to their equipment and the game, AND tuned their bows AND learned not to take stupid shots, there wouldn't be any need for excuses, would there... At least, assuming they could shoot worth a hoot. [:-]

Hey all,

I am rather new to the modern bowhunting scene. I used to hunt a lot but had a severe shoulder injury and had to stop hunting for a number of years. Now I hunt with a Crossbow. Yes, I know a lot of avid bowhunters dont consider that bowhunting, but I'd rather hunt with the crossbow than not hunt at all. I love the early part of Bow season, you can learn so much from just sitting and being observant.

I shoot 125 Grain Spitfires and have never lost a deer I shot at, 3 shots,3 kills. I am not a great marksman, but Ipractice and can hold my own. I am sure if I shot fixed blade I could have the same percentage.

I believe the biggest factor with any arrow/broadhead/bow cominationis shot choice and placement. If you dont choose a good shot or are not willing to pass a mediocre or bad shot then youjust have a crap shoot and a roll of the dice. I would much rather walk away knowing Imay get another chance ata nice animal than to take a poor shot.

At the end of the day even if you pass a shotyou got another day to sit in the woods and enjoy part of mother nature's bounty.
