shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
this morning i went out with my bow... its the last day of muzzleloader here in ohio but i broke the nipple yesterday so this morning i took my bow out instead.. around 8:20 a doe and a spike came out of the brush.. i took aim and shot the doe.. i walked up to look for blood and kicked a very nice buck out and another doe but anyways i found my arrow.. it was covered from tip to fletching in bright red blood(Good) but it also had white hair on it... she was bleeding like a stuck hog... i followed puddles of blood for about 350 yards and the blood started getting smaller and turned to nothing... i couldnt believe she ran that far.. i looked everywhere for about 3 hours and couldnt find her..i found white hair while tracking to..not to mention 4 big bucks i seen running together that easily scored 130 plus the biggest maybe 160.. anyways DOES ANYONE HAVE AN IDEA OF WHERE I MIGHT HAVE HIT HER??? PLENTY OF BLOOD THAT WENT TO NO BLOOD ANY IDEAS OR ANYTHING?

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
Well you need to tell us a little more about the hit. The way that it sounds you must have entered or exited low but from what you've said that's just a guess. Were you on the ground or in a tree? Did you not see the arrow hit? Give us some more info.

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
Sounds like a muscle hit to me.Did you see the impact of the arrow? How did she react? But based on the color of the blood, the white hair and the distance you trailed her, I'd say a muscle of some sort, but would need more info to be positive.

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
My uncle shot a deer a few years ago and showed me the arrow. There was white fur and blood all over it also. But his deer bedded down just 50 yards away and thats where he found it. He had shot his in the white part of the neck. Although its probly not likely, it is possible that you may have hit her there. I have seen perfecly shot deer run for a very long time and this is probly what happned to your deer. Just an idea.....

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
sounds to me like you hit her low. i shot a really nice buck one year during shotgun sean and hit him low like that. he ran 1/2 mile over to the neighbors property run under his stand and he finished it off. i would most definately back off and give her time. you possibly pushed her too. i wouldn't give up though. it is very possible she lost enough blood, but very likely she went a long way. good luck to ya and keep us posted.

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
i was on the ground .. 25-30 yard shot... she was standing broadside and went to turn to the left as the arrow struck ... it did look low but still looked like a kill shot... any thing else u need let me know..

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
I had a buddy that shot at a buck this season and had blood all over the arrow. We had ALOT of blood, bright red blood ,and white hair. He wasn't sure of the hit. We followed it for a while and just like you described, the trail ended all of the sudden after over 100 yards of a real good blood trail. A week later, I shot the same buck and found that my buddy had only sliced the belly of the buck.Could you have sliced the doe low?

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
It is clear to me that you either hit very low or in front of the legs, because of the white hair. I also feel this way because the blood was bright red with no food or gut material. The deer may not die, but any hope of finding it if it does die is to give it 3/4 hours before tracking. I shot one earlier this year through the shoulder into the neck. It did not die, and I killed him three weeks later.
You said you found puddles, this may be where the deer tried to bed up but heard you coming and ran. From all of the deer you heard running about, you may not have noticed the doe jumping up on you. How long did you let the deer sit before looking? |
RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
I think you hit it in the briskit. Way low. Good Luck finding her.

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
Check near water. I know this sounds odd but try it you have nothin to lose. My grandfather has been huntin dinosaurs and deer since beginning of time. Sorry not dinosaurs but hes old enough it might as well have been. Anyway he says deer will try to stop the bleeding by rolling in mud to try to close the hole. I have never seen it but he swears by it. I would also hope for the best prepare for the worst.

when i noticed she was going pretty far 150 yards i stopped and went out for about an hour and then came back and started looking i thought with all that blood she was sure to die

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
saltflat, Sounds like your grandfather is a wise man, this is very true and I've personally witnessed it on several hunts.
It's many times bow shot deer go unclaimed just out of site due to them being pushed. I'm not saying that the case here I just making suggestions. Some deer are very hard to go down, does included. A rule of thumb I use if I see the arrow enter the deer and know exactly where I hit it I'll persue it in 1 hour. If it goes down in site I'll go claim in 30-45 minutes. If I don't see where I hit it and I don't feel it's a great shot I'll come out get bite to eat take a nap what ever and come back to claim 2-3 hours at least. If it's a gut shot these deer can go 4-6 hours or more. I'm the tracker in our group and when someone gets one down and can't find it they come for me. I helped a guy on his first bow kill on a very small doe one year he hit it far back and low, this deer only bled very small amounts maybe 1-2 drops every 30-40 yards, after 300+ yards and 5 hours I finally caught up with her still alive and a portion of her intestine hanging out. Needles to say she was promptly put down to end her suffering. It kinda sounds possible that you might hit the deer in the brisket, they do bleed alot of bright blood when hit there. Could've grazed a upper leg lower briskit area to. Did you find any greyish hair as well as the white? If it's all white (snowwhite) then it maybe a little further back then the briskit. Something that I due when I can't find any blood and the trail's gone cold is hang a piece of toilet paper at the last place where I find blood and then go out 10 yards and make a full circle around the paper then go out 10 more and another full circle. keep doing this and usually you'll find your game in 40-80 yards. I hope you find the deer or evidence that it's not a fatal shot anyway.I live down in southeast ohio and if it wasn't too far or too much time that'd past I'd help you find her. Good luck hope this helps. |
RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
Was there any bubbles in the blood you found? If so a good chance
it went thru brisket or lower neck.Sounds like entrance wound or exit wound was definetly low.I tracked a doe that one of my buddys shot some year's back that made the simmular move during arrow flight. He had cut the bottom of the wind pipe!Gave the deer 4 hours. Still jumped her.Gave her 2 more hours still jumped her again.Make a long story short we never recovered that doe.But you owe it to the animal to give it every attempt you can! |
RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
Like someone stated earlier it sounds like a muscle hit. They bleed profusely then just die out to no blood at all. Keep in mind its line of travel, and try to figure out where it was trying to go. Also, look near water, after losing a lot of blood they get thirsty.
Good luck |

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
Sounds to me like you were more concearned about the bucks you were moving instead of the animal you pulled the trigger on! Tisk Tisk Tisk!
|
RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
Sounds like a little low and too far forward and you may have got more leg than anything else. A leg can bleed profusely do the amount of vaines and artieries that run down the leg. Put your best foot forward and look a bit more but I am going to say, your shot was not a killing shot.

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
When I found the arrow I shot my buck with it was bright red with bubbles and lung matter all over it. It also had alot of white hair all over it. Needless to say he went 60 yds. and died mid leap (double lung/heart shot). Point being there is white hair on a deers side also mixed in with all the gray and brown.
As for my buddies buck, he shot it at 40 yds. slight quartering towards him(got it on video). We jumped him an hour later and backed out. We gave him another 5 hours and went to look for him. We tracked him 300 plus yds. He doubled back and I found his "new" trail 40 yds. back from the end of his bloodtrail. We finally found him laying in creek(water) still alive. He was dispatched quickly. Guess what my buddy had gotten one lung, the top of the heart, and liver (not including the second shot). We could not believe it when we cleaned him. We now call him the Bionic buck. Make sure she didn't turn around and head some other way, they like to be sneaky like that sometimes;) Shane |
RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
yeah i would check bedding areas too deer when hit like that normally bed down and as far as this deer has ran it might have tried to go back and bed down at the usual bedding place

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
The doe I shot this year left a great blood trail too. I tracked her for 50 yards before I jumped her. After I jumped her though I didn't see much blood. As I watched her run over the hill I decided to back off until that afternoon. When I got back to the farm house I called for some help. After about an hour of searching and no bloodI spotted her bedded down in a ditch. I stalked up on her and finished her off.
In the end I found out that the first arrow just caught one lung. This may be what you did with your doe. |
RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
well I have have shot a buck were there was a lot of blood and hair and I it hit right on. but you could have hit her low or in a muscle because it will clot up after awhile.

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
I agree with what saltflats G-paw says, I shot a doe in the butt this year with my muzzleloader( don't ask) and tracked her for 2 miles. I did hit the artery and there was loads of blood. While I was tracking her Ispotted her and another doe walking in a field. I left went and got my stand from my tree and called my hunting buddy to come help. I also calledmy neighbor who owns the field to get permission to get on his property. All this took about 2 hours then we started tracking. I mademarks along the blood trail through the woods and came to a field that she ran across. Picked up the blood trail across the field, and there she was low and behold with another doe walking to a bedding area. We watched her for about an hour and decided to move in on her and to get ready for a shot. I stepped two feet into the thick broomsswitch and they both took of like bats out of hell. I ended up not giving up and finding the bloodtrail again and saw where she ran down the center of a creek and there was a spot where she laid down in the creek. I ended up finding her in some really thick brush. I had to shoot again as she jumped up to run off. I will say that I did keep find clots in most of the puddles where she laid down. Good Luck and do not give up, you owe it to that doe to not let here become coyote dinner.

RE: shot one ( cant find it any ideas?)
my dad shot at a doe this year and we started tracking her and we have massive amount of blood. Then we found her bedded down about 80yrds away. we got to about 10yrds of her and she took off leavin very little blood, we never found her cause my dad gave up, one thing that i read a couple days later is that a deer could lose 30 to 40 percent of its blood and still continue on its way, so just because u have good blood to begin with dont mean they will go down shortly.
