Ohio deer hunting
I am in the beginning stages of planning an Ohio archery hunt next year. I am from Western NY and am interested in hunting OH "without" the use of an Outfitter. Can anyone provide me any information or locations that would be appealing in OH. I hear that there isa hunt-by-permission program throughthe ODNR, is anyone familier with this?

RE: Ohio deer hunting
You have to have WRITEN permision to hunt private land ,on your person . They are very strick about this . I have some buds that hunt there , that live in Pa . They allso have some public land to hunt , and some big bucks depending on the county .

Something to think about when you call the ODNR is getting a list of the state parks that only allow bow hunting, Alum creek, and Delaware state park are 2 near my area that allow this, They can get crowded on the weekends, but the state leaves the camp grounds open so you can camp where you hunt.

RE: Ohio deer hunting
thanks for the site teamster!! Can anyone provide me with information on the Dillon Wildlife area? Would this location be a good choice for archery season and/or the muzzleloader season. Ohio game and fish talks this location up..

RE: Ohio deer hunting
I just looked at a map and the Dillon Wildlife area is in Licking and Muskingum counties. Go to the ODNR web site and look at the deer photo's and search those counties. Is I'm not mistaken Licking is one of the best counties in Ohio for trophy bucks. They have a page in the regs that breaks down counties by deer taken and trophy bucks taken. Look for it on the web site and see the numbers for yourself. If you can swing it, I think that area would be a great place to hunt.

Here is a page with the deer kill #'s threw the first 6 weeks of archery season. Licking is right at the top of number of deer killed. Knox is also way up there and borders Licking county as well. So I would bet Dillion wildlife area is just full of deer and probably a few monster bucks as well. |
RE: Ohio deer hunting
teamster, I spoke with an employee at Dillon today, they said there is an abundance of deer there, and since an article has been published in a magazine recently, the hunting pressure has increased as well. We might give this spot a try, there is no hunting in the park, but the wildlife refuse around it is open for hunting, sounds like a really good spot (during the week)
