Spined a BOONER, he didn't drop.....?????
On Tuesday last week I had 3 nice racked bucks under my stand, just behind me. I'm turned in my tree watching them play, rub, scrape, spar. It's 7:30 am in Ohio, the weather is about 50 degrees. The largest of the three was about a 125 inch eight pointer. I hear a stick break to the front of my stand... a 140 inch 10 pointer. I get to full draw, it walks into my only lane and I see HIM. A giant. Main beams as thick as my wrists. The base of the antler is like a pop can around the brow tines. Wow, I probably said it outloud. Walking the same trail as the 10 pointer -- instead of taking the step around the tree it steps to the other side and comes right towards me. I'm 22 feet shooting a Mathews SQ2, with Carbon Impact Fat Shafts and Rocky Mountain 75 grain tips, (65 lbs). I couldn't get him to stop until he was underneath me. I guesed him at 175 inches, mainframe 10 with the mass of a 5 1/2 year old buck. He stops, I steady my pin, and thwack. He jumps to 30 yards and stops, I can see my arrow -- all of it but about 2 inches. I hit him right where I was aiming, right between the shoulder blades. How do you hit a deer there and have it not pass through or spine and drop...the odds have to be 5000 and 1. The arrow must have hit the spine but not the spinal cord. The arrow hit bone and stopped dead. I looked for two solid days and nothing, not even a drop of blood. I believe I saw him again, but it was at two hundred yards. Maybe it wasn't my deer this year. On Thursday I took a fat doe double lung at 20 yards, that made me feel a little better.
Good luck.

Sounds like you may have hit either a vertebrae or one of the thick parts of the ribs attached to a vertebrae. The good news is if that is what happened the deer will most likely live. Hopefully you'll get another crack at him.

Most likely will live.... but you aimed in the wrong place. From straight above you have to aim BEHIND the shoulders. There isn't much between the shoulders. To easy to miss. If you aim behind them your are at the center of the lungs. Look at some anatomy charts and you'll see what I mean. Sounds like he'll be Ok if it doesn't get infected.

I would have to disagree with the first two posts that the deer will be alright. I doubt if the deer will be able to get the arrow out with only two inches sticking out of his shoulder blades. If this is the case I don't see how he will be able to heal up right. This is the main reason I don't like to take straight down shots. The lack of a blood trail and the small target make a bad combination. I would guess that sadly that buck is not running around still but laid up somewhere in alot of pain.
Wouldn't you be if you had an arrow sticking out of you?

SW IOWA... I think you OR I read it wrong. I read it as ONLY two inches of penetration. The arrow probably got knocked out or broke off not to long after the shot. I shot a deer with a broadhead buried in the backbone and broke off.(about 6 inches in length) It was all healed over. Found it when we skinned him. Deer don't pull arrows out. They fall out, get nocked out or break off on trees. Two inches of penetration is really not much at all. It Barely got through the hide and meat before stopping. The real problem with it all was he aimed at the WRONG spot.

No shot there. Why not let him walk 10yds out before taking the shot?
My guess is you had a "Big Rack Attack"!

Same thing happened in my area about 2 or 3 years ago. A guy shot a monster of a non-typ deer. Same type scenario and shot placement. Nothing...notta....no blood and they never found him. Well a month later and 2-3 miles away someone blasted him with a shotgun. He was a big non-typ just over 200 inches.
