RE: Please tell me I'm not the only one.....
Stuff like this is why i like to read on here, so that i can learn from someone elses screw up before it comes around to bite me. Not that this one is a screw up, but i can still learn from it and know things to look out for..

RE: Please tell me I'm not the only one.....
I never even thought twice about it. Does the cold really add THAT much weight to the pull or are you guys at the edge of your draw weight pulling ability? I mean it can't be more than a few lbs can it? I don't think the cold can have that much of an effect on your body.
I have sat all day with out moving in bitter cold and never had any problems what so ever. I was cold and stiff yes but that shouldn't stop your muscles from working. Unless like I said you guys are at the very edge of your ability to pull back your bows. If that's the case then you guys need to turn them down because you areWAY over bowed. |
RE: Please tell me I'm not the only one.....
I dont think it adds poundage to a bow but theres no question that cold effects how well your muscles move. I'v not had this happen that I couldn't draw but have found it difficult a time or 2. When I first started I borrowed a Loggy Boyu climber stand that the platform & seat are one piece. You climb & once you get where you want you raise the seat. It locks in with a small button thats a snap to push & fold the seat down. When your warm. ;) Well I spent a day in the thing & towards dark it got real cold & fast too. I started shivering & figured its past time to go. Bent over to lower the seat & I couldn't push the dern button no matter how much I tried. Tried using the but of my knife & eventually got it. That day I imagine if a deer woulda come I'da had trouble drawing for sure.

It's good to hear all of the different experiences/opinions. I may very well be somewhat 'overbowed'. Of course I would never want to admit that! Thanks for the replies. All good advice.

First, let me say that I'm glad that you discovered this when it was a doe in range and not a monster buck of a lifetime. I believe that part of the problem was the 25-30 practice shots. I'm not saying that they weren't a good idea, merely that they were a contributor. If you don't think so, go out and do 25-30 pushups, then sit stationary in much cooler conditions for a couple of hours, and then drop down and try doing pushups again. I think that you will find them much more difficult now. Just 2 cents from a guy that's done all kinds of exercise, in all kinds of conditions for the last 19 years in the Army.

Some options for you.
Viagara, back .. up what's the difference? More mashed potatoes and steak. Take off your bra before hitting the stand, it can be restricting. Sometimes the apron strings just get in the way. Seriously, crank the bow down as you are at the toplimit of your range. If you want to shoot the weight, practice at an even higher weight then crank back for the season. I am a bit disappointed that you didn't catch at least a little hell here for admitting you couldn't get it back at the moment of truth!!! |

RE: Please tell me I'm not the only one.....
ORIGINAL: saltflat When I begin to get cold I draw my bow back about once or twice an hour and hold it for a few seconds. This keeps your muscles pretty warm. Another thing that works is a squeeze ball, flexing your muscles generates heat which keeps them in good working shape. If they go cold then ya got to warm them back up. Yep 100% accurate! |

I don't think the cold can have that much of an effect on your body. No it isn't a matter of being at the edge of your draw weight and in fact, although I cannot prove it, I'd venture to say that different limb materials are also subject to dramatic changes depending on temperature and other conditions. Think about it...steel bends much easier at higher temps and becomes stiffer and more brittle at lower temps. Of course the limb is not a steel material but the principal is the same. Of course the amount of clothing required at low temps also creates restricted movement to a degree, especially at the joint areas where the clothing tends to bunch up and constrict the arm, shoulder, etc. It all adds up and can at times have a pronounced effect on your ability to draw. |
RE: Please tell me I'm not the only one.....
Cold has a different effect on different people (which accounts for some of the smartass, macho repsonses on this thread). It can have quite an effect on even highly trained athletes for example, causing their performance to suffer and break down. Like I asked before how MUCH added weight can the cold possibly add to the bow??? 2lbs...5lbs....10lbs? Mine feels the same. Again am I stiff from the cold? Yeah but the either the strength is there or it's not. So if someone can't pull back their bow because of an added couple of pounds of draw weight then they are over bowed and it's THEM who are trying to be macho, having their bows set at such an amount that even the slightestincrease in weight (or decrease in their stength) causes them not to be able to draw their bow! |
