"Quiet" Crossbow?

I'm considering getting a crossbow, mostly for recreational/target purposes but would also like to hunt with it. Here in IN, we can only use Crossbows during late archery season (only 2 weeks).

I know by design crossbows are fairly loud compared to compound bows but I would like to find a decent rig that is quiet for a crossbow.

Any ideas?

Price range? That would, in large part, determine suggestions.

However, ignoring cost, I shot the least expensive Tenpoint model (TL-4 maybe?) and was quite impressed with how quiet it was compared to some of the other models that local shop carried from Barnett, Horton and Excalibur.

Next would have been the Horton Explorer 150 and last, and probably the quietest, was the Barnett RC-150 (Old Version). One guy had it set up with two sets of limbsavers on the limbs while using the factory aluminum bolts and that crossbow was at least as quiet as the average compound. Ofcourse, with only a 9.5 inch powerstroke and a speed of about 250 fps it should be. ;)

Barnett RC-150
Price isn't a huge factor. Would like to find something under $500.

Is this the Barnett you're referring to?

I hunt with crossbow and personally I don't understand why a quiet crossbow is such a big deal. If you have a good shot angle, a fast and accurate bow it doesn't matter if your bow sounds like a .308 that deer doesn't have a chance. Pick up a horton or an excaliber and you'll have a great bow.;)

I agree with spiffy that if you have a good fast CB sound shouldn't matter, unless you are taking far shots and the deer can jump the string. I have a horton supermax 175 and I love it but will admit that it is a little on the loud side. It shots at 330 fps acording to the local crongraph down at the archery store and is a dead on nock buster, so I feel that outways the sound.

I shoot a Horton Legend Sl it's about 5 years oild and I have a set of limb savers on it. Fat enough the deer can't get out of the way but the limb savers make a difference in the noise as well.
