RE: Pic post for GaBowman.........
Thanks for posting the pic Deerdust.
Me and my son found a place where alot of hugh rubs and some pawing were early this season so we decided to team up so one of us might get a shot at the bruiser using in there. We were hunting about 100 yards apart in hardwoods, Allen sitting on the ridgetop and me in the holler next to the creek. Both sides of our stands were joined by thick pines with trails leading into them. We got on stand that afternoon late that afternoon due to problems at work. We settled in at 5:45PM into our stands, but keep in mind the temps were pushing 90 degrees so we didnt think the deer would be out moving until nearly dark which is nearly 8 PM. Less than 5 minutes after I settled down in my climber I heard a shot from Allen and a doe ran past me. She looked hit, but I wasnt sure. About 15 minutes after that 3 does came out from my side, so at 15 yards I shot one and it went about 10 more yards and laid down and died. A little later on I heard another shot, then another, and another on the ridge. Aluminum was clanking on trees all over that ridge. Finially, after about 10 more minutes Allen called my name so I went to him. At this time it was only a little past 6:30PM. Man, needless to say I was more than pleasantly surprised to see such a big buck lying about 30 yards from his stand. His story was that he shot a doe right after he heard me get up the tree. Later he saw the buck come out of the thick pines walking in my direction about 30 yards from him. As the deer came into an opening he let her fly, but missed!! The buck never broke stride walking. We assumed he checked a pawing between us and turned and walked down the ridge passing Allen at 20 yards. His second shot centered the ribcage and the deer went about 10 yards and laid down and was looking around. After a couple of minutes the buck got back up and moved about 15 yards and laid back down and was still looking around. He was still about 30 yards from the stand, so Allen decided to take another shot instead of waiting to see if he would get up again and hit the deer in the shoulder. The deer laid his head over and expired. We lost the doe he shot, after trailing for over 200 yards. From the signs the doe was hit in one lung but was also hit in the guts.We jumped her (we think) about 9:30 that night and gave up. I know I could have went back the next morning and found her, but the meat would have been ruined from heat (and possibly coyotes)and we would only have tromped the place out again and wouldnt have been able to do anything with the deer anyway. I had the 10 point rack scored at 118 & 7/8 inches gross. Body weight was between 175 and 200 lbs. (guessing) The head is at the taxidermy shop, and unless a larger bow killed buck comes in in the next week we will get the mount for free since the tax. gives the largest deer head for free. If I dont even see a buck this year I can honestly say that I've had a great season since I was able to be with my son when he killed his largest bow killed buck ever. It was truly an awesome hunt.
