RE: Looking For Advice On Pass Thru Shots

I had a hard time with complete pass throughs this year untill I switched broadheads. I was using 100gr. Thunderheads never had a pass through with them since i started bow hunting, now I switched to Muzzy 100gr4 blade, and have taken two deer this year, both complete passthroughs. I thought it was something I was doing wrong, or bad setup, but it turned out just to be the heads.

Tip 1: Get rid of them mechanicals
Tip 2: Practice
Tip 3:Dont rush your shot
Tip 4:Take a deep breath while drawing, exhale, be sure of the shot, shoot.

Are you sure your arrows aren't catching the shoulder area on the opposite of the deer? This may cause it to hang up once in awhile. Other than that, I don't see what the issue is. I shoot a 55lb. X-tec with 27" CX 200 arrow with 75 gr. Muzzy's and I've blown completely through 9 out of 10 deer in 2 seasons with it from ranges of 8 to 55 yds. The only deer it didn't shoot through, the arrow lodged in the shouder on the opposite site. The broadhead busted through the hide creating an exit hole, but the arrow stayed in the deer.

You may want to do some paper checking at longer ranges. I've watched the guys at my local pro shop shoot their 3-d setups through paper at 20 yards, and find bad arrow flight at that range. It usually meant they had an underspined or overspined arrow and had to adjust draw weight or tip weight to fix it.

RE: Looking For Advice On Pass Thru Shots

After using mechanicals for years with only a couple pass throughs I decided to try something different. This year I used fixed blade heads (Slick Trick 100 gr.) and a heavier arrow and got pass throughs on a doe and a 3 1/2 year old buck. Both shots were broadside double lung, so no thick bones, but my other broadhead/arrow combo would rarely make it through with the poundage I shoot (58 lbs.). My complete arrows weigh 470 grains. So my suggestion would be fixed heads and a heavier arrow.

If you are still not getting a complete pass through, shoot through paper and see how it is shooting. You need to keep single cam bows in tune. If your tear is off left or right you are losing a lot of power once your arrow hits anything solid.
