Deer Feed
 

Now that my season is over, I am putting out a few mineral/supplemental feed sites on my property to keep deer using it and for trail cameras. I have used Iodized salt, Lucky Buck, Corn and Apples in the past. Do you have any ideas for a low-expense deer feed, any type of livestock feed or supplement that would work? I think the squirrels are hitting the corn too much. Thanks for any advice!

i use whole corn and it seems to be working very well and yes the squirrels like it too but just deal with them. They can only eat so much.

I use the 50# trace mineral blocks along with year round food plots. A while back someone posted a mixture you can make yourself with ingredients purchased from a feed or livestock store. I wrote it down but lost it. Maybe they will see this and re-post. Yes, corn gets to be very expensive. Good luck

i have 5 locations 10 pounds of shelled corn each spot and it was gone in 2 days

Ingredients: Makes 200 lbs. for about $23.00

1 part Di-calcium phosphate, this is a dairy feed additive bought at feed stores.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $11.00 you need one bag.

2 parts Trace mineral salt, the red and loos kind without the medications.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $5.00 you need two bags.

1 part Stock salt, ice cream salt.
Comes in 50lb Bags at around $2.00 you need one bag.

Directions:

-Use a 3 pound or similar size coffee can to use as your measure for each part of the mix.

-Mix all together well but not until read to use, keep ingredients separate until ready to put to use.

-Dig or tear up a circle in the soil about 36 inches wide and about 6 inches deep.

-Mix your mineral mixture with the soil.

Maintenance:

-Replenish in 6 months with fresh supply of mineral, and then each year there after.

My problem with corn is the coons. I have had as many as 7 on a trail cam picture with 5 being pretty normal. On the gravity feed barrells, they will go thru 100lbs per week. I went to broadcast feeders and set them for minimal time-2 seconds twice a day and it seemed like the coons must be spinning them and dumping the feed. I think I will have to start trapping.

Setting your feeder for daylight hours only , and having an electrified varmint guard on the slinger , really cuts into the coons nosh opportunities . Coons will come out during the day for an easy meal , but they're not as eager if it makes their pelt stand on end and they wind up with nothing . Watching those furry freeloaders do the kilovolt dance is always entertaining . ;)
