Can a book teach me the fundamentals?
 

Againthe noob has a question. I am an old fashion guy. Can a book provide me with the basic imformation regarding bowhunting?
Has anyone read good books about bowhunting and can they advise me on some of them, so i can get a grasp of the fundamentals?

When is the best time to go and look for wildlife?

Books can help. So can magazines and "some" of the TV hunting shows.
This forum can help with specific questions in a more "real time" fashion.
One of my favorite books is,I don't have it with me right now but I think the title is Finding wounded deer.
Lots of good tracking info in it.

Best time to see wildlife is usually mornings and late afternoon.

Just get out there
learn from your mistakes
practice with your bow
practice with your exact hunting set up including clothes
practice with your broadheads
if you are going to hunt from a tree stand practice from a tree stand
Did I mention, practice:D

All the info,scouting,stand selection and hanging out here will not make the arrow go where you want. You have to practice to be able to close the deal.

My first year of bowhunting I purchased a book called "Bowhunting Equipment and Skills" and have been a long time subscriber to the magazine "Kentucky Game and Fish". Honestly, I've learned more from going out with experienced friends and being shown "the ropes". Everytime I go out, I keep track of the lessons learned or reinforced that day. Now that I have some experience, I look back at the books and articles and gather some different things to try.

I learned the basics of trapping from a book and was pretty good at it so yeah, I think it's possible to learn the basics from a book but you'll need to apply those basics to your hunting area and particular hunting situation. Nothing will help you more than learning from your own mistakes.

Very good advice from Buellhunter here. Practice and know your equipment and it's limitations.

A good start on the basics of bowhunting is withthe International Bowhunter Education Program Class. See http://www.archeryweb.com/archery/ibep.htmand http://www.nbef.org/.All statesshould have the course; some states and military bases require the course. You'll get it straight from the hip with local instructors. It's typicallya 10- 14 hourcourse.

Books can help you to learn about bowhunting and things to do, but they can only teach so much. After that there is only one teacher that will help you.....EXPERIENCE!!!

Good luck in your endevors, and hopefully you will only need to make mistakes once.
