How early do u start heading to your stand?

What time does everyone head out in the morning, is it wise to use a flash light to get to your stand?? I have tried without one and I make 3 times as much noise??

I make sure I'm in my stand at least a half our before first light. Unless you can see where your going in the dark , use a flashlight. Deer can see you when it's dark wether you have a flashlight or not.

also what is the advantage to getting to the stand really early, time to let things quiet down again??

Yes , I think a half hour is plenty. I know guys that get in there an hour and a half early and IMO thats overkill. I kick up deer all the time when heading in to my stand in the dark. After settling down for a half hour things return to normal. For whatever reason , when it's dark and you kick up deer , they dont run off far , they usually go 20 - 40 yards and stop and snort at ya.

This year I have decided to wait until sun up,or shortly after.Reason being I don't like getting up early, and after reading an intreuging article in Outdoor Life about a specific author that has had success waiting until then.I'll know if it makes a differance soon enough.
Speaking of being in the woods early...Last year while staying at our hunting shack my dad asked if I wanted to get up when he went to work.Knowing he left an hour before 1st light I said yeah why not.Well he wakes me up,I get ready and go get in my stand.Wasn't long when I figured out I had been dupped. That morning he had to be to work an hour and a half earlier!I sat there for almost two hours listening to coyotes run past me,deer walking around, and the neighbors cows mooing. All the while it was so dark I couldn't see my hand in front of my face!

I'm like Bowfanatic......The deer can see you in the dark as well as in the light...I go 1/2 hour before day break........Just seems every thing has forgot about me when the sun comes up...

I use a flashlight, and my gole is to be up the tree, bags and bow ready and sitting still 60 minutes before daylight. I know most will say 60 minutes is too much, but in TX its better to get in while its cool, have 30 minutes to sit and cool down, spray down with scent killer, and in 30 more minutes its time to hunt. Besides...its just a little bit more time I get to spend in the woods

I think it all depends on where you are shooting. If you are sat on a trail between the bedding area and food get there before first light. If you have patterned the deer to a specific route through the woods just get there 30 mins before they get there. I realise I have over simplified it and made it sound real easy ( Its not ). I have just started waiting until I can see what I am doing purely because my stand is a bit tricky to find. Got a nice doe for the freezer at 9:30am. Good luck....You will work out what is best for you and soon get your rewards.

I ussually watch or listen to see what time the sunrise is in my area, then I plan to be in the stand about 45 minutes before that. Sunlight will begin about 20 before the sunrise depending if it is clear or cloudy outside. I always use a flashlight becuase I think that moving quietly is more important then having the light on. I ussually point it straight down and it is not a very bight flashlight.

For me, morning hunting, aka: every Saturday, becomes a looong day. I need to get up at 3:15am so I can get out of the house by 3:30 am. It takes me 1hr to drive to my buddies (pick his sleeping butt up) and grab a cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts...drive another 5min to where we hunt. I like to get into my stand by 5-5:15am which gives me at least 45min before things start happening.

We were running late yesterday afternoon (that "work" thing held us up)and got into our stands @5:20pm -- we startled a bunch of deer which were directly under our stands on our way in, and didn't see much of anything after that. I firmly believe in the 1hour "buffer".

I always like to be in the woods 30minutes before first light.

Then I go in around 2pm in the evening and sit till it's dark.

Usually get to the stand 45 minutes before legal shooting.

And every time, I think of the movie 48 hours, where Nick Nolte tells Eddie Murphy, "You make more noise than a busted chainsaw."

I still can not seem to walk quietly (without breaking branches on the ground)...I know, I should rake a trail...

In any event, it seems I have a lot to do with getting up to the stand, spraying down, hoisting bow up, taking off quiver, positioning everything right...etc. This usually leaves me 20 minutes of silence before legal shooting time.

I always use a flashlight, since I'd hope if there are some knuckleheads around me, they won't shoot me thinking I am a deer.

Orion in IL, You should try a pair of Cabelas "BAERS FEET". They're thick wooly padded slippers that go over the boot. They help me not snap so many twiggs when walking to my stand and they're only $29.95.

Maybe the author is just afraid of the dark.

Like everyone else I like to be in my stand at least 30 min. before first light. I use a light even though no one else has permision to hunt in this area. If there is anyone I want them to see me and as for the deer they can see you if you use a light or not it don't matter. I have spooked some going in the woods but they seem to come back to check it out later which isn't too bad. BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good hunting
