RE: Complete Newbie.... Which treestand?
Butch,
I'm 6' 2" tall and 220 lbs. I love my Summit Viper and think it is a good bow hunting stand as well as gun.....It's light and very easy to set up.....I like ladder stands when hunting crop fields, but would rather have a portable in the woods......Sorry, but I have no experience with strap on stands....

I would start out with a climber, then, as finances permit buy some fixed position stands. Once you get the hang of climbing with a climbing treestand it is pretty simple. A good climbing stand will hold you up with no problems.

I have about 8 stands. API lock on and Summit Viper as a climber. The lock on is good if you can leave the stand in the woods with out worrying that it will be stolen. It is nice going to your stand that is already up and ready to hunt from. I also have climbing sticks. Climbing sticks and lock on stands take more effort to put up than climbing stands. The climbing stands are also more comfortable than most lock on. If I could have only one stand it would be a Summit Viper or Cobra climber.
