That's a GREAT deer! In all honesty (and money permitting) I would get a cape on ebay or from a taxidermist friend and get the rack mounted. I say this only because of the hard work and dedication you put into this deer! Wish you could have tagged him....hopefully that fork horn will eat well and stay in the shadows! ;)

That sucks monkey toe nails. Sounds like you did all your homework just to have it all flushed down the toilet. Sorry to hear it. If I were you, Id do a euro mount just for the memories. Id do it myself, they are real easy to do.

Get a cape--although you didn't get to close the deal, you did good in your pursuit, and at least you gained some good experience and got to keep his rack. I'd give him some respect by mounting him wit another cape--you did everything, but harvest him.

That is to bad to hear. I would hate to have a deer patterned and then have that happen to me.

A few years back we saw a real tall 8 point in an area we hunt and when we went to hang stands found him laying dead under one of our trees. We were never close to him like you were to this one though. Tough break.
